Harbour teams record 5 wins on opening day at U19 Nationals
All three Harbour teams had two games on the opening day of the Aon U19 Nationals in Dunedin on Friday and collectively won five of the six games played.
Harbour Women opened their campaign with a 63-42 win against Manawatu. Harbour led just 41-39 with ten minutes to play but surged away in the fourth holding Manawatu to just three points to claim victory. Jess Moors top scored with 14 points ably supported by Tessa Talo-Tomokino and Merita Davidson who logged 11 points apiece.
They had little trouble in their second game walloping Otago 91-28. Jordyn Maddix led the way knocking down six threes on her way to 22 points. Emme Shearer (18pts), Parehuia Delamere (13pts) and Hannah Wentworth (12pts) also notched double figure scores.
Harbour B Men had a fine win on their opening game defeating Hawkes Bay 81-70 after trailing 37-34 at half-time. Reimar Cruz (17pts), Thomas Morgan (14pts) and Dallas Clayton (13pts) were each in double figures.
The scoreline was almost identical but the result was different as the B Men went down 83-70 to Tasman in their second game of the day after being outscored 45-33 in the second half. Reimar Cruz and Joe Wuthrich had 18 points and 17 points respectively in the losing cause. Dallas Clayton (10pts) and Josh Kooiman (9pts) also made useful contributions.
Harbour A Men had to overcome a ten points deficit (46-36) at half-time to win their opening game, eventually going on the defeat Waikato B 87-77 in a scrappy encounter.
Sean Murphy scored 25 of his game high 33 points after the break to guide his team to the win. Forwards Sam Mennenga (12pts) and Reihana Maxwell-Topia (14pts) were the other main contributors.
In the late game Harbour A beat cross-city rivals Auckland 82-78 in a tight encounter. Harbour led 47-37 at half-time but Auckland dominated the third to tie proceedings at 63 apiece with ten minutes to play. Taine Murray (20pts) and Sam Mennenga (22pts) scored a dozen points between them in the final frame to seal the win. Marvin Williams-Dunn was also prominent scoring 15 points.
