Sam Waardenburg equals career high for Miami Hurricanes

Another week of action in college hoops and another batch of good performances from Harbour players on basketball scholarships in the States including a career high equaling 15 points from Sam Waardenburg.

Despite Sam equalling his career best with 15 points on a perfect 4 from 4 from the field and six out of six from the charity stripe University of Miami Hurricanes were defeated 99-81 at No 8 ranked Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Having lost three straight games to finish January the University of California Santa Barbara Gauchos have now won three on the bounce to start February after a 64-61 victory against UC Irvine. Matt Freeman posted 9 points having earlier in the week come up with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists in the loss to Hawaii.

Dan Fotu scored 9 points (3/3FG) as St Mary’s Gaels got a 66-60 road win at San Diego. St Mary’s found #2 ranked Gonzaga too hot to handle on Sunday hammered 90-60 – 8 points in that one for the former Rangitoto College standout.

In a non-conference game the University of South Dakota overwhelmed Peru State 106-45 with Kruz Perrott-Huntmaking 5 points, 3 assists and a steal for the Coyotes.

Akiene-Tera Reed scored a game high 17 points but it wasn’t enough to prevent Virginia Commonwealth University Rams (8-2) falling to their second Atlantic 10 Conference defeat of the season; 56-55 against George Washington.

Reed also came up with 5 rebounds and a season high (possibly career high) 7 assists.

In front of a sell-out crowd of 3,200 Fordham accounted for Rhode Island winning 60-50. Zara Jillings was highly productive off the bench scoring 7 points on a perfect 3 from 3 from the field whilst also adding 5 rebounds and a block in 20 minutes.

“We got great minutes from Zara,” said Coach Gaitley post game. Hopefully more minutes will ensue for the former Tall Fern.

Fordham improve to 6-3 in Atlantic 10 play sitting third on the ladder.
