At the double-double - college roundup

The opening week of the collegiate season in the States has seen some impressive performances by Harbour players most notably by Keeley Tini.

Keeley posted not one double-double, not two, but three double-D’s as Williston State went 2-1 in their opening three games. She began with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Bismarck State, followed that with a monster effort (19pts/17rebs) in the victory over Miles College before making another 19 points plus 11 rebounds in the 86-58 win against Dakota College.

Also in Junior College action Jordyn Maddix scored 10 points and Parehuia Delamere 8 (plus 7 boards and 3 steals) as Western Texas were downed 63-54 by Cisco College. Rashaan Smith, after transferring from Dawson College registered 4 points, 3 rebounds and a couple of steals to help Western Nebraska College to an 82-62 win against Northwest College.

In NCAA Division I play the University of Southern California won a totally one sided affair against Antelope Valley 120-34. After a standout 4-year career at Virginia Commonwealth Tera Reed began her time at USC with 9 points (4/5FG), 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a couple of steals.

Freshman Jess Moors had her first taste of collegiate basketball as Colorado State University Rams crunched Chadron State 78-43. The 2020 Harbour Breeze guard scored 4 points (making all 4 of her free-throw attempts) and also snared 4 rebounds in 17 minutes on court.

It’s not often you make your college debut against international opposition but that’s what Hannah Wentworth did for Eckerd College. Recovering from injury, the sophomore transfer from Utah State Eastern, was restricted to just 10 minutes of action as Eckerd took on the Chilean national team.

Men

James Moors is a year ahead of sister Jess at Colorado State. He made a nice start to the season recording 17 points on 7 from 8 shooting as the Rams thumped Adams State 92-55.

Another ex-Westlake man Sam Mennenga kicked off the 2021-22 season with a nice double-double of 14 points (6/7FG) and 10 rebounds (5 at the offensive end) as Davidson College Wildcats clawed Ferrum 98-56 in a pre-season encounter.

Kruz Perrott-Hunt, a 2019 Junior Tall Black World Cup teammate of Sam Mennenga has also started the season with a flourish. Kruz scored with his first 3-point shot of the season before going on to post 12 points, 6 assists and 3 steals as South Dakota eased past Simpson College 98-47.

Also a former Rosmini College and Harbour guard, Marvin Williams-Dunn scored with his only shot in the game – a three – as Ouachita beat Philander-Smith 76-64.

Reihana Maxwell-Topia played for Harbour at the 2021 U21 National this year before returning to Chicago for his second season with St Francis Fighting Saints. This week the Saints beat East-West 93-75 with Reihana producing a solid 6 points (3/5FG), 5 rebounds 4 assists performance.
