Akiene-Tera Reed "'Finnishes" in style
With the American collegiate season almost at an end and the start of the Sal’s NBL still 10 days away we this week take a look at our Harbour players playing professionally overseas.
An outstanding performance by Akiene-Tera Reed couldn’t prevent her club Pyrinto bowing Finnish League quarter-finals this week, swept 2-0 in the best-of-three series by Forsan Alku.
Beaten 96-78 in Game 2 Tera accumulated her 13th double-double of the season - 24 points and 14 rebounds to accompany 4 assists and 4 steals.
In her first overseas professional assignment Tera scored 552 points in 27 appearances at 20.4 points per game. The second highest scorer for Pyrinto she led the rebounding count with 9.3 boards per contest and also garnered 2 steals per game as the club contested the play-offs for the first time in five years.
Also flirting with a double-double was Isaac Fotu for Japanese club Tochigi Brex. In a low scoring 59-56 loss to San-en NP Isaac had 8 points and 9 rebounds for the Japanese League defending champions that have a 23-22 record at this point of the season.
Following the conclusion of the Australian National Basketball (ANBL) season Corey Webster has undertaken a short term contract with the KK Mornar club in the Montenegro League. To date Corey has played three games for Mornar and has averaged 10.3 points per game.
Also playing in Europe after a successful ANBL season with Cairns Taipans is Sam Waardenburg. Sam is playing in the German League First Division and has played five games for Ludwigsburg but is yet to make a major impact averaging 2 points and just 7 minutes per game.
Still in Germany Yanni Wetzell scored 17 points, on 8 from 12 shooting, as ALBA Berlin won 88-77 against Weissenfels in a EuroLeague fixture. He followed that with another strong performance in the 84-67 defeat of Bamberg. The former Westlake Boys High and Harbour forward scored 16 points (5/8FG, 6/8FT) to go with 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks.
Matt Freeman, in his third season playing in the German Second Division, added 8 rebounds to 8 points as Bremerhaven edged Dresden 81-77 to improve to 15-13 and 8th spot on the 18 team ladder.
Later this week Chris McIntosh will be making his Tall Blacks debut at the 3x3 FIBA Asia Cup in Singapore. Following the tournament Chris will be straight into Sal’s NBL mode as the Auckland Tuatara prepare for their opening fixture against the Giants in Nelson on April 8th.
