Weekly Wrap - Tall Ferns selections plus career night from Rob Loe
Penina Davidson, Akiene-Tera Reed and Tayla Dalton have been selected for the Tall Ferns squad that will compete at the FIBA Asia Cup in Sydney. The Tall Ferns begin the tournament against Korea followed by other Pool games against China and Lebanon.
In the tournament opener against Korea next Monday Penina will play her 50th test. Currently with 99 points at the Asia Cup Penina looks set to overtake Micaela Cocks’ record of 122 points at the Asia Cup.
The team departs for Sydney on Wednesday.
In the latest round of the Sal’s NBL Rob Loe had another whopping game for Auckland Tuatara in their come from behind 101-86 win against the Southland Sharks. Rob pulled down 19 rebounds to go with a season high 32 points – we believe it could in fact be a career high for Rob. In scoring 32 points Rob becomes the first Tuatara player to reach 600 career points.
Charlie Dalton scored 11 points for the Tuatara while it was nice to see Sharks wing Brayden Inger (9 points)back in familiar surroundings.
Playing less than 24 hours later the Sharks suffered their second defeat of the weekend going down 94-74 to the Franklin Bulls. Daniel Fotu like Brayden, a former Rangitoto College and Harbour standout, scored 15 points for the Bulls while Matt Freeman scored 10 points on 4 from 5 shooting.
Congratulations to Rocco Chang on his commitment to Central Maine Community College Mustangs for the upcoming 2023-24 American collegiate season.
Rocco was a member of the 2023 Harbour U19 National Championship winning team and joins another former Harbour rep, and good friend, Boston Caldwell at Central Maine. Boston will be playing his second season with the Mustangs.
