Weekly Wrap - Penina Davidson and Tall Ferns immense
What a win by the Tall Ferns on Monday!
We posted a Facebook piece yesterday but it’s worth recapping on the 66-64 victory against Korea at the FIBA Asia Cup in Sydney.
Our three Harbour representatives Penina Davidson, Akiene-Tera Reed and Tayla Dalton were outstanding against the number 12 ranked team in the world (NZ are ranked #29).
Penina, playing her 50th test, posted 24 points and 10 rebounds with those points taking her past 100 career points at Asia Cups.
Tera was also in double-double territory adding 11 rebounds to 14 points while Tayla, although only scoring 2 points, was a terrier on defence in her 22-minute stint.
The Webster brothers Tai and Corey made big impressions in their Sal’s NBL debuts for Otago Nuggets and Canterbury Rams respectively.
In the South Island derby it was Tai and the Nuggets that were the grinners after winning 107-94 in Christchurch with Tai compiling 28 points making 6 from 10 from beyond the arc.
Corey was no slouch in defeat finishing with 18 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
Tai followed that up with 19 points and 10 rebounds as the Nuggets completed a road double with a 94-87 victory in the Hawkes Bay.
For the first time this season, and for many a decade, two Auckland teams fill the top two spots on the NBL ladder after the Auckland Tuatara and the Franklin Bulls enjoyed Round 12 home victories.
On Friday night Dan Fotu played a starring role as the Bulls took care of business against the Wellington Saints winning 100-89. Dan top scored with a career high 31 points (12 from 14 shooting) while Matt Freeman contributed 8 points.
Also top scoring was Rob Loe (25 points) as Auckland Tuatara dominated the Nelson Giants 104-70 on Saturday. Charlie Dalton scored the first seven points on the night and finished with 15 while Kruz Perrott-Hunt tallied 13 (4/6 3-pointers) and Chris McIntosh 6.
It wasn’t a good weekend for the Saints who followed their defeat at the Bulls with a second loss of the round in Palmerston North going down 111-108 to the Manawatu Jets. Liam Judd was terrific for the Jets scoring 18 points as well as claiming 7 rebounds.
Brayden Inger scored 9 points as Southland Sharks let victory fall from their grasp going down 90-94 in New Plymouth against the Taranaki Airs.
