Weekly Wrap – Ton up Tayla Dalton
In this edition of the Weekly Wrap we headline the achievement of Tayla Dalton who played her 100th game for St Mary’s College Gaels at the weekend.
Unfortunately the Gaels couldn’t deliver the win for the senior guard in her milestone game - Tayla scored 11 points, on 4 from 5 shooting - as St Mary’s went down 87-66 at UC Davis.
Just four Harbour women have previously reached the NCAA Division I appearances century mark and they were Tall Ferns Micaela Cocks (125 games at University of Oregon, 2006-10), Rebecca Dew (112 games at University of Hawaii, 2008-12), Zara Jillings (100 games at Fordham University, 2017-20) and most recently Akiene-Tera Reed (135 games, Virginia Commonwealth 2017-21 and USC 2021-22).
Tayla has made 65 starts in those 100 games with the 11 points taking her to 771 career points. She has power to add with the Gaels having another 20 regular season games scheduled between now and March.
Next week we will hopefully have news of another former Harbour representative star chalking up 100 NCAA Division I appearances.
Other NCAA Division I action
In his 50th game for Fordham University, Zach Riley scored 3 points as the Rams clinched a tight one against North Texas 60-59.
Tom Beattie grabbed a season best 7 rebounds to go with 4 points as Hawaii defeated Hawaii Pacific 78-53.
NCAA Division II
Sean Murphy grabbed a career high 18 rebounds as Nebraska Kearney won on the buzzer against Kiani Saxon and his previously undefeated #23 Missouri Western. Sean added 6 points while Kiani finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Marvin Williams-Dunn was a perfect 3 from 3 from beyond the arc as Ouachita Baptist trounced Dallas Christian 91-42. It was the biggest win by the Ouachita Tigers since 2012 as they improved to 2-5 this season.
Tessa Talo-Tomokino scored a dozen points in North Eastern State’s narrow 63-57 loss to Emporia State – NES had led 40-22 at half-time.
Jess Moors made 9 points as Nova Southeastern downed Palm Beach Atlantic 75-62 to improve to 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.
NAIA
Playing just 14 minutes Rashaan Smith again top scored for Texas Wesleyan but they went down 60-49 to Tabor. In addition to her 13 points Rashaan also led the rebounding count with 7 boards. Rashaan followed that with a near double-double of 12 points and 9 rebounds in the 71-52 loss to York.
Junior College
Boston Caldwell made 5 from 8 threes in amassing 25 points as Central Maine beat Washington County 94-70. Rocco Chang, making his first start of the season, contributed 5 points and 3 rebounds in the win.
Gillette College enjoyed a couple of wins and a loss with Qaizden Stephano playing a strong hand in the demanding three games in three days schedule . Across the three games she averaged 10.3 points and 8.3 rebounds with her 31 points accumulated on 15 from 22 (68%) shooting.
Jaelah Clayton scored 10 points as Mineral Area College (ranked Top 25 in the nation) made it 11 wins from 12 games with a 97-49 demolition of John A Logan College.
In the professional ranks:
Tera Reed, with an almost faultless shooting display scored 13 points as Melbourne Boomers thumped Perth Lynx 93-62 to regain top spot on the Australian WNBL ladder. Tera made both of her 3-point attempts, both 2-point efforts and 3 from 4 from the charity stripe.
Brayden Inger scored a season best 26 points, making 7 from 9 three-pointers, as Hemel Storm blew Birmingham Rockets away 92-60.
Isaac Fotu posted 17 points (5/7FG, 7/7FT) to help Tochigi Brex to an 86-83 win over Kawasaki BT in the Japanese League. Brex now 15-4 this season and up to second in the Eastern Conference.
Making 4 from 6 from beyond the arc Matt Freeman scored 16 points although Craiova went down 90-73 to top of the table Oradea in the Rumanian League.
Yanni Wetzell scored 11 points to help ALBA Berlin overcome Weissenfels 85-70 in a German Cup tie.
James Moors produced a solid 10-points and 7 rebounds performance as Leeuwarden went down 87-72 to Feyenoord in the Dutch League.
Closer to home, in the Australian NBL, Sam Waardenburg came up with 12 points and 9 rebounds as Cairns Taipans won a high scoring affair against Adelaide 36ers 116-101.
