Weekly Wrap – 100 up for Emme Shearer

Having put the spotlight on Tayla Dalton, who played her 100th game for St Mary’s College Gaels last week, it’s the turn of her good friend Emme Shearer to be the headline performer.

Emme became the 28th Kiwi to play 100 NCAA Division I games when suiting up for the University of Portland in their 81-51 loss at #9 ranked Stanford.

Emme top scored for Portland with 12 points and now has 823 career points which moves her up to 21st on the Kiwi women’s all-time Division I scoring list. In addition her 79 starts place her 10th highest in that statistical category.

Portland bounced back with an 83-40 demolition of Willamette, a game in which Flo Dallow snared a season high 8 rebounds to accompany 8 points.

NCAA Division II

Aided by a second double-double of the season from Sean Murphy the Nebraska Kearney Lopers enjoyed a 79-66 win against Bethany. Sean totalled 18 points and 11 rebounds – he passed the 100 points mark for the season at an average of 11.0 per game in the process.

Murphy’s former Rosmini College and Harbour teammate Marvin Williams-Dunn scored 8 points as Ouachita Baptist won a tight contest against Arkansas Monticello 80-74.

Back in the Eckerd College line-up after undergoing off-season surgery Hannah Wentworth has registered four consecutive double figure scores as Eckerd posted three wins and a loss in the last couple of weeks. The 13 points in her second outing carried the shooting guard past 600 career points at Eckerd in 59 appearances.

Jess Moors scored 11 points to compliment 5 rebounds and 4 assists as Nova Southeastern outlasted Mount Olive to win 70-57 then followed up with 10 points in the 71-49 defeat of St Anselm.

Tessa Talo-Tomokino pulled down a team high 7 rebounds to accompany 8 points in Northeastern State’s 75-56 loss to Washburn.

With the touring Harbour U19 Women’s team at Concordia to lend support Charlie Dalton and Concordia University Irvine eked out a valuable 64-61 PacWest Conference win against Dominican – 4 points and 3 rebounds for Charlie in this one. 

NAIA

Rashaan Smith and Oklahoma Wesleyan rounded out pre-Xmas fixtures with a 71-59 win against Oklahoma City. Rashaan finished with 12 points and 7 rebounds. The former Birkenhead College and Harbour forward is averaging 11.4 points and 7.1 rebounds across the first 11 games of the season.

Junior College

Boston Caldwell top scored with 16 points but the Central Maine Mustangs dropped their last game, before the Christmas break, to Southern Maine, 69-62. Boston scored 16 points leaving him 5 points shy of 200 points this season.

Chipola College suffered just their second defeat of the season when losing an overtime thriller to Shelton State (76-70). Zaaliyah Kailahi-Fulu pulled down 10 rebounds and scored 6 points in the loss.

Qaizden Stephano contributed 15 points and 5 rebounds as Gillette College secured a 74-46 victory against South Mountain.

Professional Players

Brayden Inger is in fine shooting form for Hemel Storm in the British League. A week after a season high 26 points he made 5 from 9 threes for 19 points as Hemel won a high scoring affair against Nottingham 106-100. Brayden is shooting the 3-ball at a heady 45% having made 23 of 51 attempts this season.

Isaac Fotu equalled his season best with 18 points to help Tochigi Brex (16-5) to an 85-71 win against Kyoto Hannaryz in the Japanese League.

Yanni Wetzell scored 10 points (5/7FG) as ALBA Berlin fell 85-71 to Serbian club Crvenda Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) in a EuroLeague tie.

In the Australian NBL Sam Mennenga scored a season high 18 points as Cairns Taipans edged a thriller (102-101) in the Queensland derby against Brisbane Bullets.

In another one-point game Tai Webster scored 10 points to help Perth Wildcats overcome Tasmania Jack Jumpers 89-88.

Finally, in the Women’s Australian NBL Akiene-Tera Reed had 8 points and 6 rebounds as Melbourne Boomers slipped to an 84-72 loss to Canberra Capitals.
