Weekly Wrap - Tai Webster and Charlie Dalton the headline acts

This week’s Wrap begins with a look at the former Harbour reps producing standout performances in the professional ranks and on this occasion it’s four former Westlake Boys High players grabbing the headlines.

Tai Webster, in his second season with the Perth Wildcats, made his highest score for the Cats in their 106-99 home win over South East Melbourne Phoenix. Tai finished with 20 points as Perth improved to 13-7 and outright second on the Australian NBL ladder.

Yanni Wetzell was joint top scorer with 13 points, to go with 8 rebounds, as ALBA Berlin beat French club ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne 88-63 in a EuroLeague tie.

Matt Freeman made 3 from 4 triples in making 12 points as Craiova fell 96-70 to Valcea in the Rumanian League.

James Moors produced his second double-double of the season for Leeuwarden as they beat Den Helder 75-64 in their latest Dutch League contest. James scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds with four of those at the offensive end.

Now to American College hoops:

NCAA Division I

Emme Shearer currently ranks first in the West Coast Conference in total steals (38) and steals per game (2.0). She added five more to her tally as well as 15 points (5/8FG, 5/6FT) as Portland got the better of Santa Clara winning 73-63.

NCAA Division II

A first collegiate double-double by Charlie Dalton helped propel Concordia Irvine to a 69-62 win against Westmont. Charlie came up with 18 points and 15 rebounds – both career highs – in the win.

In his 50th start (in 67 appearances) for Nebraska Kearney Sean Murphy accumulated 14 points, 6 rebounds and a couple of steals as NKU came up short against Missouri Southern State losing 88-78.

Kiani Saxon scored 9 points and came up with a career high 4 blocks as Missouri Western State defeated Northwest Missouri 76-70. It was a notable win for Kiani and Missouri Western with their opponents ranked #14 nationally.

Tessa Talo-Tomokino top scored with 15 points, as she also brought up a century of points for the season as Northeastern State got the better of Newman winning 68-62 to improve to 3-5 in the Mid-American Conference.

Nine points from Hannah Wentworth helped Eckerd College roll past Florida Tech 73-54 with those points taking her past one hundred for the season at 12.6ppg.

Parahuia Delamere lit up the stats line with 6 points, 7 rebounds, a pair of assists and 3 steals as Young Harris beat King University 61-41.

Junior College

Boston Caldwell top scored for Central Maine with 16 points but the Mustangs were corralled by local rivals Southern Maine, defeated 69-62.

Making 3 from 5 threes Jaelah Clayton scored 14 points as Mineral Area College continued their hot form. Mineral Area, ranked #22 amongst all women’s junior colleges nationally, beat Moberly Area College 81-64 and now have an impressive 16-1 record.

Zaaliyah Kailahi-Fulu pulled down a game high 13 rebounds and also scored 7 points but couldn’t prevent Chipola College suffering a 76-48 loss to Northwest Florida State. Zaaliyah now has a double ton on the season with 104 points to sit alongside 140 rebounds.

New Zealand NBL

After playing NBL1 in Australia last year Jett Thompson has returned to these shores and signed with Bay of Plenty Whai for the 2024 Sal’s NBL season.

Also linking up with an NBL club is Aaron Sievert. A member of Harbour’s 2023 U19 National Championship winning team Aaron has joined the Auckland Tuatara with whom he will play as an amateur this coming season.
