The people behind the AFL entry of the new franchise sides; Gold Coast (2011) and Greater Western Sydney (2012) have been working away and all looks good, meaning more opportunities for local footballers hoping to realise their football dreams.
Today, buoyed by the news of former Manly NRL Chief Executive, Grant Mayer's appointment as General Manager- Corporate Partnerships, the GWS franchise also got a further boost by the way of draft concessions.
The highlights include giving Team GWS nine first round picks in 2011, the top eight rookie picks next year, zoned access to players from NSW, ACT and the Northern Territory, access to 16 uncontracted players and the right to have an expanded list and increased salary cap.
Also, from the end of the 2010 season, Team GWS has the right to select up to a dozen 17 year olds born in the January - April window (Jan-April 1993), with the option to relocate to Sydney for the 2011 season. The club also will have the option to trade some of this group to secure experienced AFL players from other clubs, consistent with the rule that applies to the Gold Coast FC.
