Clean sweep for North Coast
Under 12s
North Coast 2.1-13 def. Northern Rivers 1.1-7
The Under 12s turned out to be a dire struggle with both sides strong in defence despite the clean skills from both outfits. The first points were not scored till the second quarter, with the second half seeing the game open up with more space for players to lead into. Kane Latham and Sam Taylor were prominent in the midfield, laying tackles and winning contested football. The North Coast eventually put more pressure on the opposition, with best on ground, Jai Lane inspirational as he was strong around the ground. Despite the strong efforts of Northern Rivers in a tense final quarter, the locals held on for a tough win.
Under 14s
North Coast 8.10-58 def. Northern Rivers 2.7-19
The choppy conditions at Richardson Park meant for a high-pressure contest in the Under 14s with the class of the North Coast side, coached by Dean Burkitt, proving the major difference over the four quarters. Sawtell's Jake Longhurst was adjudged best for the locals, with the youngster contributing in attack and defence. He got worthwhile support from Patrick Gillingham and Damien Attwood in the midfield, especially in the second half where they were able to break the lines and the pressure applied by their direct opponents. Brendan Norton was a genuine target up forward in a true team performance that sealed the Mike Kenny Memorial Shield.
Under 16s
North Coast 13.16-94 def. Northern Rivers 5.7-37
The Under 16s proved to be the match of the day and was a spectacle for those in attendance. The Northern Rivers improved noticeably on last year's performance and benefitted from extra experience as a team in the Gold Coast competition. The North Coast marginally extended their lead at every change in a physical yet highly skilled encounter. Jack Gillingham and Simon Taylor formed a strong combination in the midfield, with both adept to winning the contest ball and delivering well to an open forward line. Elliott Schmidt got the most opportunities in front of goal whilst Sam Turner was handy in the first half with numerous goal assists. Jack Campbell and Darby Pearce were others to relish the responsibility of giving the North Coast momentum by the way of centre clearances. The work rate and courage by both teams was breath-taking and something to behold. The North Coast eventually reigned supreme in yet another impressive team performance.
