Sawtell handed North Coffs their first defeat for the 2009 season with a 128-point romp at the Coffs Coast Leisure Park.

The win was sweet revenge for the Saints who lost by a similar margin in Round 1 at the same venue. The result was never in doubt as Mark Couzens led a dedicated Sawtell effort to lead by six goals going into quarter-time.

Couzens, arguably the most valuable player in the competition, was superb in the middle but also had an impact with eight goals up forward. Last year’s premiership captain was one of twelve goalkickers for the victors.

The Saints were just as dominant in the second quarter to put the match beyond any doubt before half-time. Daniel Pritchard and Luke Matthews again were amongst the Saints best in a strong team display.

The Kangaroos were never able to rebound with the absence of Sam Dawes (flu) compounded by the loss of Darren Funston and Brad Giri to injury. Even with their main trio firing, it would be a brave man to suggest the Kangaroos would win on the day.

The flood of goals slowed in a more even second-half with Trent Cook and young, Levi Sands impressive in a lacklustre ‘Roos display.

Time is a great healer and in Sawtell’s case, it ensured that after the full-time siren they could walk off the field with their heads held high knowing they are the favourites for another successive premiership.

Coffs Swans

It was the Swans of old at Fitzroy Oval in their 75-point win over Grafton.

Honours were shared in an entertaining first quarter, with neither side able to hold momentum in the damp conditions. Shawn Purton was dangerous up forward during this time for the Tigers, as was Scott Morgan, as the duo kept the score ticking over.

The second term saw the Swans gain a timely lead with Sam Turner delivering well and kicking a miracle goal from the forward pocket. Grafton lacked accountability at this stage as the Swans ran riot through the middle.

The Tigers were unable to add to their score in the premiership quarter with the Swans sealing the win with one of Evan Duryea’s six goals. Duryea was excellent and added a lot of spark and direction which was desperately needed after the Swans big loss last weekend.

The Tigers missed a beat with Dale Beaver playing up forward during the opening stages after half-time.  As a result, Grafton lacked the pace needed to bust the game open and give the dangerous Purton more of the ball near goal.

The Swans ball movement in the conditions was sound. Rob Eddy and Kieran McEvoy disposed well mainly off half-back, whilst Dion McGregor and Tim Whalan battled valiantly for the northern outfit.

The loss demoted Grafton to fifth, whilst the Swans bounced back and will look to play catch-up to the two top teams with the finals fast approaching.
