The AFL North Coast will support the battle against men’s cancer this Saturday with its inaugural Call to Arms Round.
The Round is an initiative, which Football Operations Manager, Jim Woodlock hopes will become a regular feature on the AFL North Coast calendar.
“The clubs are behind the concept and it is a very valid one given the fact cancer is one of the leading causes of death among Australian men,” Woodlock said.
Statistics reveal cancer around one-third of all cancers are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices.
Woodlock believes the participation element of the weekend is central to the Call to Arms Round.
“We are in support of all people, including males, being physically active and making healthy decisions, and AFL is one of an array of sports offering that alternative to members of the community,” he said.
The players and umpires involved will wear yellow armbands, with clubs undertaking activities to help raise funds in aide of life-saving research, as well as education and support programs.
The Coffs Swans in their match against Grafton at Fitzroy Oval will hold their annual Sponsors Day, with North Coffs and Sawtell also conducting their own fundraising for their top of the table clash at the Coffs Coast Leisure Park.
The Port Macquarie AFL club (in their home game vs. Nambucca Valley) is taking this concept further by hosting a VIP tent, Cancer Support Network, Guest Speakers, Auskick Displays between all games on the day, with Mid North Coast Junior players taking yellow buckets at regular intervals for donations. There will also be a raffle.
The Port Seniors will also lend a hand on Sunday by going to the junior footy armed with yellow collection buckets, whilst holding a raffle.
Everyone is encouraged to support a worthwhile cause with first grade action kicking off at 2.30pm.
