NBL Superstar CJ Bruton to visit Coffs Harbour

CJ Bruton, one of the most successful and decorated players in the history of the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) will be in Coffs Harbour tomorrow to meet with the Suns players taking part in the Spring, High Intensity Program.

A six time NBL Champion (threepeat with the New Zealand Breakers, 2 with the Sydney Kings and one with the Brisbane Bullets), an NBA draftee, Bruton was also captain of the Australian Boomers during a ten year reign from 1998 to 2008 which saw him win a Gold Medal at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, and participate in the Athens and Beijing Olympic Games.

Bruton has an extensive international playing career in which he which showcased his impressive basketball skills in Germany, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Israel and Venezuela.

CJ (Calvin Junior) comes from a legendary basketball family, the son of a former great US basketball import, Cal (the Pearl) Bruton an NBL winning player and coach and following his naturalisation , an Australian Boomer.  Cal Bruton’s status as one of the legends of Australian Basketball is reflected in the fact that he was one of the first inductees into the NBL Hall of Fame, a recognition many believe will one day be bestowed in CJ himself.

CJ Bruton visit to Coffs Harbour will be a return visit.  In 2006, playing then with the Brisbane Bullets, CJ’s team won the NBL Pre-season blitz staged in Coffs Harbour.  It was the start of a good year for CJ and the Bullets who recorded a regular season 28 win 5 loss record and then went on to capture the NBL title by defeating the Melbourne Tigers featuring Andrew Gaze in their line-up.  Bruton’s personal record for the season, 14 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game was equally as impressive.

J Bruton retired earlier this year (March) from the NBL after 516 games in the league.

The more than 50 U16 and U18 boys and girls who are currently part of the Coffs Harbour Suns Spring High Intensity Program will be in awe of the presence of CJ Bruton at their training session at Sportz Central tomorrow.

While in Coffs Harbour, CJ will announce details of an elite player development camp he will be running in Coffs Harbour October 4th and 5th.
