DIGGERS Rest has continued riding a wave of good form, extending its 2012 unbeaten run to seven with a 20-point win over Sunbury Kangaroos on Saturday.
It was only the Roos’ second defeat for the year so far, but Diggers coach Jamie Elliott says his side isn’t getting carried away, stressing there is still much the Burras can work on. Sunbury challenged Diggers fiercely in the third quarter, piling on five goals to two to cut the margin to just four points at threequarter time after the Burras had looked in control at the main break.
But Diggers Rest rode through the poor spell and settled into gear in the last quarter, drawing praise from Elliott. ‘‘I thought it was a pretty good game all round,’’ the coach said.
‘‘I was pretty pleased with our fellows in the last (term). They won most of the stoppages and kept the ball in our half, so it was good.’’
Former Collingwood and West Coast Eagles player Brent Tuckey kicked four goals for the Burras.
‘‘He’s played forward for us every week and floats around, takes a few marks and I thought he was excellent,’’ Elliott said of his star recruit. ‘‘He just led up to the football all the time and he just presented so it was good.’’
Elliott, in his first year at the helm, is proud of his side’s efforts to date but is keen to keep the lid firmly on. ‘‘It’s a lot better than being at the bottom of the ladder, I can tell you, but I’m still learning and I think we’ve got a lot to improve in this side,’’ he said.
‘‘We will go in pretty confident but I think the main thing we will worry about the is way we want to play and structure up right and keep improving every week.
‘‘That’s the main issue for us at the moment.’’
Diggers Rest will take on Melton Central on Saturday at Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve at 2pm.
