Last night at Melton Recreation Reserve in Melton, the Riddell District FL hosted the Western Region FL in the annual Under 16 Interleague match.
In a high class match that was end to end and frantic in pace, the RDFL eventually prevailed over their WRFL rivals. Both teams provided many highlights for the big crowd that gathered under lights. After a solid first quarter, the RDFL lost their way in the second to hand the ascendancy to the WRFL. The WRFL were beginning to finish off their hard work that went unrewarded in the first quarter as they took a slight lead into the half time break.
Half way through the third quarter the game was up for grabs as the WRFL held a two goal buffer in a tense period of back and forth football. Eventually the RDFL managed a goal and then slammed home four more to swing the game back in their favour.
The game could have gone either way and at the 8 minute mark of the last quarter it was the RDFL leading by a solitary kick. That was until some classy finishing pushed their lead out to 14 points and essentially closing the door on the WRFL.
With players fast becoming tired, the RDFL kept up the pressure on the WRFL to run out 21 point winners with Zane Collier awarded best on ground for the RDFL, while Michael Boyle was awarded best on ground for the WRFL.
