Wallan has earnt some breathing space inside the top six with a hard-fought 31-point win over Woodend/Hesket at a very muddy Gilbert Gordon Oval. The victory for the Pies now opens up a six-point gap between them and sixth-placed Cats as they look to secure their position in the top six early ahead of the September finals.
Rockbank challenged Diggers Rest early as the Rams looked to pinch an upset win before the class and experience of the Burras' line-up saw them press home for a 26-point win. Craig Marshall was again at his brilliant best for the Burras as he worked tirelessly around the midfield and moved forward to kick two goals as his team kicked 10-goals-to-four after quarter-time. Jake Armistead was the pick of the Rockbank players, winning many telling touches and kicking a goal.
Brian Ruffell played his best game for Riddell since crossing from Lancefield two years ago. The strong and athletic forward kicked six goals as the Bombers opened up a match-winning 56-point quarter-time lead over Broadford at the Harley Hammond Reserve. Broadford was able to restrict the Bombers to six goals after quarter-time and kick four of its own to restrict the damage with Matt Coomans the pick of their players in a challenging contest.
Shane Jacobs kicked two goals in a best on ground display for Kilmore that saw the Blues defeat Lancefield by 17 points on a very wet JJ Clancy Reserve. Callum Furness was in the best for the Tigers as both teams shared one goal each at half-time before the Blues ran away with the game.
Luke Dowson and Chris Meacham kicked five goals each for the Sunbury Kangaroos in their 139-point win over Melton Central. Chris Lock was one of the best for the Blues.
Dave Cornish was at his best yet again for the Pies at the Gilbert Gordon Oval as Wallan battled away to victory over the Hawks. The ground was back to its brilliant muddy best and it was a hard slog for all players. Matt Sawyer was a star for the home side across half-back as the Hawks worked hard to restrict the dominance of the Pies that opponents have been used to seeing this year.
