The Riddell District Football Netball League commenced its 2013/14 RDFNL Junior Football Academy this past Monday night at the Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve.
More than 200 players across all teams in the Under 12s, 13s, 14s and 15s age group have been invited to attend the six-session program. The program has been organised by RDFNL junior development manager, Rob Beatson, in conjunction with junior club coaches and RDFNL representatives.
Players took part in their first training session on Monday night in brisk conditions. They were joined by former RDFNL footballers currently on AFL lists in Dan Markworth (St Kilda), Matt Dick (Sydney), and GWS Giants pair Lachlan Plowman and Jono O'Rourke. They were also joined by TAC Cup stars James Sicily (Western Jets), Jake Lever and Jason Cooke (both Calder Cannons).
The AFL stars spoke with the youngsters about life in the AFL, progressing through the RDFNL and took them through some drills over the course of a brief training session. This was a great experience for the kids to learn more about what it takes to progress through to higher levels with their football careers.
The program will look to develop the kids over the summer and prepare them for potential representative duties and help them improve their football and their respective clubs.
