A YEAR after handing the Kyabram District Football League a 77-point belting, the Riddell District Football League’s campaign to climb the AFL Victoria Country Championships ladder came crashing back to earth on Saturday.
Hosting the South Gippsland-based Alberton Football League at Romsey Park, the RDFL was left to rue missed opportunities and ill-discipline as it coughed up an 18-point three-quarter time lead to go down by the narrowest of margins, 15.13 (103) to 16.8 (104).
In perfect conditions and in front of a solid crowd, the game was a genuine arm-wrestle.
No more than two goals separated the two sides throughout the opening half before the game started to open up as it wore on later in the day.
The RDFL controlled more of the ball throughout the opening three quarters but struggled to put its dominance on the scoreboard.
Riddell’s James Nolan (five goals) and Romsey’s Matt Davidson (two goals) were both lively in the attacking 50, but kicks going into the forward line were not always ideal nor was the kicking on goal at times, the RDFL finishing the day with four more scoring shots than their opposition and numerous other shots that failed to score.
