It is recognized by AFL Goldfields, the Riddell District FNL and the Gisborne Rookies Junior FC that the establishment of a second junior club in Gisborne is in the best Interests of football in the greater Gisborne area. Clearly there is limited capacity to actively recruit new participants in a rapidly growing town, and there is an identifiable need to establish a second Junior Club, and we are pleased to announce the formation of the Gisborne Giants Junior Football Netball Club for the 2016 season..
Keys to this decision are:
- Enabling children who live within the greater Gisborne Community the maximum opportunity to participate in an organized AFL competition;
- To remove obstacles and subsequently leverage the growth opportunities that exists within Gisborne and ensure AFL is the chosen sport of young Girls and Boys.
- To address the short to medium impact which is expected from the new guidelines specifically around Capping and Team Affiliations
- Acknowledging and understanding the future demands for Senior participation; and
- Catering for the considerable growth expected within the Gisborne Community over the next 5-10 years
Under the Terms of Agreement agreed to by the Riddell District FNL, Gisborne Rookies Junior FNC and AFL Goldfields, it has been agreed that:
- It is agreed by all parties that the Gisborne Giants Junior FNC will operate as a sub Committee of the Gisborne Rookies Junior FNC with the Gisborne Rookies actively working to formulate a new committee throughout the early years (2016 & 2017).
- The Sub Committee appointed to oversee the management and operation of the Gisborne Giants Junior FNC and will include the following representatives:
- Gisborne Giants Junior FNC Club Co-Ordinator – Appointed by Gisborne Rookies JFNC
- Member of Gisborne Rookies JFNC Executive
- Appointed representative of Riddell District FNL
- AFL Goldfields FDM Grant McMillan
AFL Goldfields Regional General Manager Rod Ward noted that the increased growth of football in the Gisborne area made the formation of a new club a must.
“The need for a second Junior Club in Gisborne was recognized as a priority by AFL Goldfields, the RDFNL and the Gisborne Rookies Junior FNC and we are thrilled with the level of cooperation and assistance being given by the Gisborne Rookies JFNC to assist us in creating this club”, Ward commented.
“This Gisborne Giants Junior FNC will be based at Gardiner and Sankey Reserve, and will increase the need for AFL Goldfields to work with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council to establish the critically needed new Recreation Reserve in New Gisborne with Gardiner and Sankey Reserve already at capacity”.
Gisborne Rookies Junior FNC Club President Craig Shore believes that the introduction of a new club isn’t seen as competition to the Rookies, but to allow all children in the Gisborne area the opportunity to play football in their home town.
“Our decision to assist the establishment of a new club is in the long term interests of junior football in Gisborne”, Shore commented.
“The Gisborne community continues to grow and we expect junior participation (in AFL) to increase significantly in the coming years.”
“The establishment of the new club provides an avenue to cater for this growth and importantly allow children who live within the Gisborne community to play football in Gisborne.”
“There is a considerable amount of work to complete over the coming years and we look forward to the support from the RDFNL and AFL Goldfields in bringing the Gisborne Giants to life.”
