Romsey secured back-to-back wins in its bid to keep its premiership title defense alive. The Redbacks celebrated a 47-point win over Woodend/Hesket at Romsey Park in its most polished performance of the season.
Romsey was well led by Wally Saad with six goals, Nathan Rayment in the backline and Chris Burkett in the midfield as the home team kicked away after quarter-time to celebrate a big win.
Both teams went into the game fairly even with solid match-ups across the ground. Ben Way was a big focal point for the Redbacks at one end, while Tom Gawthrop was a big force at the other end for the Hawks.
Recent rain made Romsey Park extremely muddy and slippery under-foot. Despite the surface conditions, players generally kept their footing.
Woodend/Hesket started strongly, dominating the opening term with great disposal through Ben Toman and Michael Crozier. Gawthrop kicked two goals from strong marking attempts as the Hawks broke out to an early 14-point lead.
Romsey's Wally Saad read the manual of playing as a forward to perfection, to play in front. He marked in front of his opponent and closed out the term with Romsey's opening goal in time-on to cut the margin back to eight points.
Woodend/Hesket won the opening centre-clearance of the second term and registered a goal immediately through Josh Smerdon. The silky left footer was awarded with a free-kick for a hold and put the margin back out to 14-points.
