WOODEND/HESKET v EAST SUNBURY
The Hawks took on East Sunbury at Buffalo Sports Stadium on Saturday. The locals won both football matches.
After trailing by four goals in the first quarter, the Reserves pushed ahead to win by one goal. Chris Scobell, Ric Cerminara, Rupert Miranda and Josh Connolly were stand-outs.
The Seniors started strong before East Sunbury took the lead late in the game. The Hawks foguht back and won by several goals. Liam Barton kicked three goals for the winners. Shane Lindsay, Tyson Chapman, Charlie Mathieson and Jack Lindner impressed. Dan Toman played well in his return to the club.
The A Grade netball lost to Riddell that afternoon by one goal. It was a promising display from both teams.
The combined grade netball match had the Hawks sneak over the line.
MACEDON v RIDDELL
Macedon and Riddell had a hit-out on Friday night at Clifford Reserve. Both teams were scheduled to face other opponents who both pulled out at the last minute.
The Reserves had a two-quarter hit-out with a relatively even affair. Riddell's Ben Nelson was the stand-out with crucial touches in the midfield.
The Seniors played three quarters, the last into a fading light on a smaller ground.
Macedon won the hit-out unofficially by a handful of goals.
The highlight of the game was Macedon's Shaun Harrison's running goal. Harrison picked up the ball on the wing, had a number of bounces, passed it off to a team mate, received it back and kicked a goal from deep in the pocket. Had this been a normal home and away season game, it would have been a contender for goal of the season.
Tim Walsh was trialled up forward for the Bombers and was strong overhead. Matt Dick, Jason Cooke and Sean Reilly impressed for the Cats. Lachy Henson and Haydn Ross were solid for the Bombers.
ROMSEY v MALLEE EAGLES
It was a touch of RDFNL fever between the Redbacks and the Eagles from Swan Hill. Dean Helmers returned to the club that he coached to two premierships with his new outfit.
The Eagles boasted former RDFNL stars Zac Saad, Corey Viani and Rhys Smith, to name a few.
The teams played in 32 degree heat with the Redbacks fielding a younger side. The Eagles won the match by about six to seven goals. Nathan Hoy was the stand-out player on the ground for the Redbacks in the ruck while Dan Paterson was solid in defense.
Zac Saad razzle and dazzled some of his former team mates with some telling runs, getting pinned on a number of occasions.
The netballers enjoyed a solid hit-out. Romsey's A Grade team went down in the final of a competition in Ballarat.
ROCKBANK v ALBANVALE
Teams endured extreme heat but played a quality brand of football.
In the Reserves/Under 18.5s, Rockbank led Albanvale 8.4 (52) to 3.2 (20) at halftime. The second half was reduced to two 10 minute quarters. The Rams held on to win by 21-points, 10.11 (71) to 7.8 (50).
Seniors was played in good spirit. Albanvale led the Rams by four goals at half-time, 8.2 (50) to 4.2 (26). The Rams stormed home in the second half to win a thriller by two-points, 10.7 (67) to 9.11 (65). This is great news for the Rams who only recently appointed Leighroy Sporle and Leigh McInerney as co-coaches of the Senior team.
The netballers also recorded wins for a clean-sweep for the team.
LANCEFIELD v AIRPORT WEST
The Tigers took on the Eagles at home on Sunday. Lancefield went down to Airport West in the Reserves by just one-point, 4.3 (27) to 4.2 (26).
In Seniors action, Eagles led the Tigers by 23-points at quarter-time, 3.6 (24) to 0.1 (1). The lead extended to 37-points at half-time, 6.8 (44) to 1.1 (7). The Eagles put the foot down in the third term with five goals to lead by 64-points, 11.11 (77) to 2.1 (13). Both teams traded goals in the final term, Lancefield going down by 64-points, 13.13 (91) to 4.3 (27).
WALLAN v HEATHCOTE
Wallan's Reserves and Seniors footballers played Heathcote across six quarters in hot conditions on Saturday. It was a great opportunity for all players to test their fitness and put together a good display.
The Under 18.5s played the Doutta Stars. The Pies led all day and put together a huge effort. The club's Under 17s won the premiership last season with a talented group of players stepping up into the RDFNL this season. This is a great sign of the club's depth for the future.
There was no netball over the weekend.
The club has been very happy with the pre-season so far with great numbers on the track since its first session in November. The practice match form has been solid and is showcasing the club's depth.
DIGGERS REST v HILLSIDE
The reigning premiers took to the field against Hillside. Both teams missed some big names but salvaged what they needed to out of the game. Hillside won by about three goals. Brent Tuckey, Cam McCabe, Brandon Kilty, Michael Evans, Stuart Clarke, John Ryan, Matt Krul and Steve Ruane were noticeable absentees. Many young players stepped up. Taylor Hine was best on ground. Cale Morton and Lachie Langford kicked three goals while Steve Fogarty impressed. The Reserves and Under 18.5s (who took on an Under 19.5s team) went down against stronger teams.
The netballers had good hit-outs against Melton South. Star recruit Natasha Chokljat plays her first game this weekend.
AFL Women - round seven
Riddell's Kate Darby was a late call-up for the Blues in its 37-all draw against the undefeated Brisbane Lions. She had three kicks in the first half and laid one tackle. She kept Lions star Sabrina Frederkick-Traub out of the game in the first half. Darby spent time on the bench in the second half and Frederick-Traub unleashed and virtually kept the Lions ahead.
Clarkefield's Lauren Arnell led Carlton's disposals with 16, kicks with 10, tackles with six and kicked a goal in her best effort of the season.
