The RDFNL Under 17 Interleague side took on AFL Cairns in a twilight match at RAMS Arena on Wednesday. AFL Cairns are touring Victoria and arrived in Melbourne eager to get their tour off to a great start. For many Cairns players it was their first experience in the colder climate but that did not stop them running out convincing 49 point winners over a disappointing RDFNL outfit.
The RDFNL will in conjunction with AFL Goldfields return the favour in July when 6-8 of the best Under 16 players in the RDFNL join forces with the best of the best in the BFNL, MCDFNL and CHFNL to take on Cairns as well as Townsville / Mackay.
The experience against a slick Cairns outfit will hopefully ensure the RDFNL reps are better prepared for the July matches.
Played in front of a healthy crowd at RAMS Arena, Craigieburn, the match was a solid spectical of contrasting game styles. After a tight opening term, Cairns flexed their muscles and set up their convincing win in a scintilating 2nd term. The RDFNL players did earn some respect back in the last term but the Cairns damage had been done.
Rupertswoods Billy Cannolo was very handy up forward whilst Riddell's Tommy Alkemade continued his solid form at representative level.
