It wasn’t quite akin to the Miracle on Ice, but the Riddell District Football League’s victory on Saturday remains an upset of epic proportions.
On the surface it seemed like a simple case of bad luck.
The withdrawal of two leagues from the WorkSafe Country Championships had forced a change to the fixture and it was Riddell who drew the short straw.
Instead of playing the 30th ranked Tallangatta & District FL, Riddell was instead pencilled in for a clash with the 14th ranked Nepean Football League.
Nepean, whose opponent Mallee was also a late withdrawal, were expected to win and win well.
But someone forgot to tell Riddell.
