AFL Tasmania announced the ninth team to be inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame 2013 – Legendary Team category. The team that has been selected is the Tasmania Schoolboys' Team of 1977.
Tasmania has a history of participation in carnivals for talented high school players dating back over 100 years. Many famous Tasmanian football names have represented the State at this level, including Peter Hudson, Royce Hart, Ian Stewart and Darrel Baldock.
The Tasmania Schoolboys team of 1977, coached by Rodney Radford and captained by David Riekie successfully contested the Australian State Schools National Football Carnival (ASSNFC) in Hobart in 1977. The carnival consisted of teams from all States and Territories. The Tasmanian team played and won 7 games in 10 days against the best schoolboy footballers in the nation.
AFL Tasmania’s Chief Executive Officer Scott Wade said ‘The recognition of this side is significant, the first and only time that Tasmania has won the Carnival at a full national level. There was incredible public support for the team and just another fantastic chapter, now recognised with it’s place in the prestigious Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.’
Tasmanian player David Cornelius won the State carnival’s Best and Fairest Award – the Marshall Medal.
The official induction of the ‘Team’ will take place on 5 July at the Hall of Fame gala function at Wrest Point.
