The North Queensland Stingers over-50s proved age has not wearied them by pulling off a stunning comeback against New South Wales, in the opening round of the AFL Masters National Carnival at Watsons Oval on Saturday.
The Stingers recovered from a 14-point deficit at halftime to overrun New South Wales in the closing minutes to win 5.9 (39) to 5.6 (36).
Considering his full squad only assembled on Thursday, Stingers player-coach Gary Hill was delighted with the gritty nature of the victory.
"I reckon we showed a lot of character," he said. "Full credit to them (NSW). They really stuck it to us but we got better as the game went on and I always thought we could overrun them."
While there were contributors across the park, Stingers ruckman Paul Tuckett was the standout for his side.
The Port Douglas player was the most fomidable presence on the field. dominating the stoppages and feeding teammates.
Stingers captain Peter Brosnan, who also starred for the home team, said his side's superior fitness was crucial.
"I think they ran out of steam in the end," he said. "It took us a while to get going but once we clicked we were able to run them down."
In other Stingers results yesterday, North Queensland lost to the Northern Territory in over-35s division 2 action, 60-52, and Vic Metro thrashed North Queensland 109-7 in over-45s division 2.
