Selina Goodman and Luana Healey, who is just 17, will join Brisbane-based former Tiger Breanna Koenen in the Suns team to play the Lions before the Gold Coast Suns meet St Kilda later tonight.
Former Australian representative Jo Butland will act as midfield coach for the side.
The match will be used to pick a Queensland team to play Tasmania later this season, as well as form opinions on players ahead of the AFL Women’s draft.
A national women’s AFL competition is being touted for 2017, three years sooner than originally slated, and Butland said the young women in today’s game were being groomed to star in that.
“The AFL think they have the numbers to do it (in 2017) and the push now is to get the youth side of things pumping because they’ll be the ones that are in the frame then,” he said.
“These three all have the attributes – Luana is only 17, Selina has been there (for Queensland) before and Bree has done all the hard work. It’s great for Norths to have these guys on that stage.”
AFL Queensland female high-performance manager Craig Starcevich said it was another chance to push their credentials on a big stage.
“Having this game as a curtain-raiser to an AFL game is a fantastic opportunity to showcase female football,” he said.
“It’s a great opportunity for people to see that women do play football at a high level and that Queensland has a great pool of talent.”
