About $52,000 in State Government funding was poured into sprinkler systems and top dressing the Portsmith site to lift the field to a premium standard before its official unveiling by Mulgrave MP Curtis Pitt last week.
The project was designed to help support the Australian Football Women’s League and other local clubs, including the local Cape York House Eagles, and was completed with the support of Cairns Regional Council and the wider community.
AFL Cape York program manager Rick Hanlon said the body had striven to transform the oval since it took over a waterlogged “hell of a mess” site about four years ago.
