2014 Term 4 AFL 9’s Competition Rules:
1. Two teams of 9, interchange may occur at any time and be unlimited. Two Females must be on the ground at all times, otherwise that team must play short.
2. The field is divided into 3 zones: one mid zone (40m) and two scoring zones (30m).
3. The ball must be passed to a teammate in each zone as it moves forward.
4. Teams score by kicking the football at goal from within their scoring zone. Only designated forwards can score. Male = 6 Points, Female = 9 Points
5. Each quarter is for 10 minute duration with breaks of 3min, 5min, 3min.
6. Forwards may score from a set shot at goal or on the run.
7. Forwards may not kick for goal (or play on and kick for goal) from a ‘turnover’ – the ball must be passed to a teammate first.
8. A player must bounce or touch the ball to the ground after running 15 metres. Only one bounce is permitted.
9. A kick that is caught without touching the ground or an opponent - termed a ‘mark’ - is awarded irrespective of the distance the ball is kicked.
10. If the ball touches the ground or travels out-of-bounds, a ‘turnover’ is awarded against the team that touched it last. Except from a ruck contest. The game stops and the opposing team gains possession of the ball. Advantage play will take place providing play is continuous.
11. The turnover spot is where the ball first touches the ground, is touched by an opponent or crosses the boundary.
12. If the ball bounces through the goals without being touched, the goal or behind stands, provided it was kicked from within the forward zone by a designated forward player.
Dispossessing a player:
• A player loses possession of the ball when they are touched (two handed) by an opponent, as follows:
o If there has been no prior opportunity to dispose of the football, the player must kick or handpass the ball within 3 seconds or 2 steps of being touched.
o If player has had prior opportunity to dispose of the football when touched by an opponent, a free kick will awarded.
Free kicks:
• A free kick will be awarded against any player initiating contact against an opponent.
• A free kick is awarded against players deemed to be ‘holding the ball’ when touched.
• Forwards may kick for goal from a free kick without passing.
• The player adjudged to be in the football’s drop zone first is determined to have right of way in a marking contest. There is no contact or spoiling in marking contests.
• NO ABUSE TOWARDS AN UMPIRE OR PLAYER WILL BE TOLERATED AND THE OFFENDING PLAYER WILL BE SENT OFF FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AS DEEMED APPOPRIATE BY THE OFFICIATING UMPIRE. IF DISCRETION IS DEEMED SEVERE ENOUGH BY THE OFFICIATING UMPIRE, THEY OFFENDINGPLAYER CAN BE SENT OFF FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE GAME.
