Nillumbik Jaga Jaga Australia Day Awards 2015

Each year Nillumbik Shire Council holds the Nillumbik Australia Day Awards to recognise and honour the high achievements of ordinary individuals and groups, who do extraordinary things within the Shire. Members of the community are encouraged to nominate people or community groups that make them proud to be Australian.

This year, Federal, State and Local government leaders hosted and presented awards to several recipients including the Diamond Valley Basketball Association (DVBA) President , Steve McCabe at the Eltham Community Centre on Australia Day – 26 January 2015.

Steve was recognized for his voluntary work and commitment to the DVBA when he took on the President’s Role in 2010 when the Association was in very serious financial difficulties. Supported by fellow Board members, Norm Arthur, Jason Van Hout, Joe Crupi and Peter Sharp , Steve led the Board to revive the DVBA. Under his leadership, the DVBA has not only found its feet but continued to develop and prosper into being one of the more successful sporting organizations in the State. Managing more than 5,000 visitors per week, the Association caters for under 8s at grass roots levels right through to producing National level players, coaches, referees and scorers.

Previously, one of the Association’s past Domestic Club Presidents (Eltham North Jets) , Steve has been directly and indirectly involved in many of the DVBA’s positive initiatives. His latest project sees him heading up the team with the proposed development of the Diamond Valley Stadium.

Steve said “I hope to see our governments and community working closely together to help create some long term benefits for the future”.

“I think it is fantastic that Steve has been recognized this recent Australia Day. We have several devoted volunteers throughout our Basketball Association but what Steve has been able to achieve in the past 5 years as President of the DVBA is remarkable. His Australia Day Award is very well deserved,” commented Diamond Valley’s CEO, Ross Wignell.
