U12 REP DEVELOPMENT CAMP : A GREAT GROWTH OPPORTUNITY

The last of our school holiday Northern Basketball Camps finished on the highest of high notes – 60 U12 representative athletes were in attendance for 2 days of great detail, individual feedback and investment into continuing the growth curve in the games of the next generation of our sport.

Each day covered fundamental techniques, linked them with teammate cooperation, loaded situations with decision making and communication and built to give clarity to our young athletes on how much they can impact within the game once given necessary tools and cues.

‘I really liked how we did drills that lead into game situations – it helped me understand what could happen next and what things to remember when we play’, U12 athlete Gene V said.

U12 athlete Teaghan C added ‘during the day we practiced so many things that are important to being a good player. I enjoyed the station work and the opportunity to learn from different coaches and see what help they could offer me. When we got into games I saw where all the ideas fit into place. This camp definitely helped me with how much I understand.’

Lucas G participated in the camp also, and was one of the many who made incremental improvements across the 2 days, he had this to say – ‘at camp it was extremely fun ! We moved from learning about one part of the game to the next and quickly understood that you have to be a good learner to be a good player. All of the coaches had things they said to me that helped me get better at my Basketball. I love to learn and get better for my team, and the coaches helped me do that – so I thank them !’

Some of the parents stayed for long portions of both days and got to observe the camp in action and witness the path we took the athletes on. Andrea Mincone watched her young athlete and offers her take – ‘I found the camp very well structured. The way the teaching progressed made sense to me and it was a thorough build from fundamental skills to gameplay. It’s been a great experience for the kids, my daughter came home speaking very highly of the camp’.

Nat Wilson was another parent in attendance throughout the 2 days, she adds ‘as always, this was another fantastic camp we’ve attended. It was an excellent mix of coaches, each sharing their ideas on the game. The camp looked productive and the kids were certainly worn out after a great 2 days !’

One of our camp coaches, Cress Byrne was equally impressed with the standard and engagement of the athletes, ‘the players all came with a mindset to learn which was fantastic. No matter the skill level of the players, they all learnt and grew at their own rate and made visible improvements. One of the highlights for me was the camaraderie that the players had with eachother, and it was marvelous to see the willingness to make adjustments, take feedback and help one another. Well done to all the players, I say !’

… and that ties a bow in another productive and rewarding Northern Basketball Camp period. Thank you to all the athletes, parent taxis and coaches for their work !

We look forward to seeing you all next school holidays as we keep raising the bar !
