Abigail Wehrung Becomes an Eagle for 2018

It just keeps getting better for the Eagles women with the announcement of Abigail Wehrung as the newest signing for the SEABL 2018 season.

Abi made her international debut in 2011 at the FIBA U16 Oceania Championships where her team took home the gold. In the same year, Abi was named the Victoria Country Athlete of the Year, but it didn’t stop there, Abi was offered a scholarship to the Centre of Excellence in Canberra which she accepted and while there, was awarded the Bob Staunton Memorial Award for the Most Outstanding Player.

Making the U17 Sapphires team was the next goal for the knock down shooter and she didn’t disappoint. She made the team and competed in the FIBA World Championships in 2012 finishing in 5th place.

In 2014 Abi was recruited to the Canberra Capitals WNBL team as an 18-year-old and she is still currently playing with the Caps. This season she is averaging 11.55 points per game, 3.55 rebounds per game and 2.18 assists per game.

In the 2016 SEABL season the talented combo guard played for the Ballarat Rush averaging 15.7points per game at 40.8%, 5.0 rebounds per game and 4.0 assists per game.

In 2017 she was a member of the Emerging Opals team that competed in the World University Games in Taipei City where she helped her team bring home the Gold and now, she is flying to the Nest

“I’m super excited to be a part of Diamond Valley and become an Eagle as the club moves into its first year of playing SEABL. I’m really excited for a great season under Zoe and with the team that is put together.” Wehrung said.

Head Coach of the SEABL women Zoe Carr can’t wait for Abi to arrive.

“Abi is such a talented player and competitor. She is a great leader and once again, a great person. She is a big piece in the culture that we are trying to create here at Diamond Valley. If any of the juniors want to see how you should shoot the ball from the 3, watch Abi this season!”

The Eagles need your support. Come and see Abi and the rest of the SEABL Eagles in April when the season kicks off.
