MAN MOUNTAIN OWILI JOINS THE VALLEY

The Diamond Valley’s Big V State Championship Men’s team has added 6’7 man mountain, Desmond Owili to their lineup for season 2016.

Owili brings the Eagles added size and strength as well as experience on the international stage. Owili is a current representative of the Kenyan National Team, and has been since 2009, participating in Olympic and FIBA World Championship qualifiers as well as numerous international friendlies.

Double-double machine, Owili has played the past 4 seasons for Ugandan Christian University Canons in the Ugandan National Basketball League (NBL), winning the league championship in 2015 and the East Africa University Championships in 2012 and 2013. Owili was also a 3-time Ugandan NBL All Star, taking home an All Star MVP and being crowned the Slam Dunk Champion in that time.

‘We were very lucky to be made aware of Desmond’s availability – he came recommended to us by a couple of SEABL coaches’, State Championship Men’s Head Coach, Alan McAughtry said.

‘Desmond is a physically dominating presence, is an exceptional post defender and then has the ability to throw dunk a big dunk or hit a 3 if left open at the other end.’

‘He’s been impressive in the short amount of time that we’ve had him – he’s put together 2 really good practice matches for us and proved his ability against quality opposition, in Geelong SEABL and Melbourne SEABL. The most pleasing thing though is that he’s demonstrating a work ethic – he’ll come in well before practice and go through his shooting routine or work on ball skills with a coach. He appears to be a good fit for the team and alongside Brad and young Liam positionally.’

DVBA CEO Ross Wignell added ‘We’re excited to add another athlete the caliber of Desmond to our lineup. He certainly has the physical tools and international experience that will put him in a position to make an impact in the Big V this season.’

The State Championship Men begin their season on Saturday, March 19 against the Eltham Wildcats in Eltham High School at 8pm. Their first home game will be Good Friday, March 25 against the Whittlesea Pacers at the Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre at 7:30pm.
