The Big V Wrap – Round 1

Mixed results for our Youth Men and Women in their opening round of the 2018 Big V season, as they ventured out to Nunawading on Saturday evening to face the Spectres.

First up, the VYCW had a comfortable win off the back of a quick start and some stingey defence! Keeping the spectres to only 14 points at half time, the Eagles had a 15 point lead. A balanced attack, with 35 points off the bench, enabled the Eagles to hold on to a 66-46 win. DV was led by Amelia Smith’s double-double (10 points and 10 rebounds) and Mikayla Peterson’s 10 points.

Experienced Eagle, Meg Crupi, was all smile post game “All 11 players stepped on the floor ready to play and made contributions, showing the hard work we put in over the preseason but ready to get back to practise this week to get another win this weekend!

The VYCM followed with an tough loss to last season’s Runners Up, going down 80-70. Close all game and a 3 quarter time lead of a point, the Eagles just seemed unable to finish their hard work in the 4th quarter. The Eagles had 4 players making their Youth League debut, an exciting sign of what is to come. Nic Sorani led the team, proving his work over summer is paying off, with 21 points and 6 rebounds! Matt Baggio and Chris Thomopoulos each had 10 points in their first time our for the Eagles!

Eagles Guard, Mark Girolami, had this to say, “We were disappointed with the result but we took a lot of positives out of how we played and the effort we brought. The boys are eager to get a win next week at home!”

You can catch both our VYCW and VYCM this Saturday night at Diamond Valley! Come out and support both teams in our first taste of Big V action at the Valley for 2018!
