NBL1 Eagles Round 11 Review

Saturday night saw our NBL1 teams in two nail-biting games against the Waverly Falcons here at Diamond Valley. Both teams played an impressive game, with the likes of Anneli Maley and Joel Spear dominating for the Eagles.

NBL1 Women’s:

Waverley made the most of a hot start to defeat Diamond Valley 83-76.

With free-scoring a feature, it quickly became apparent that the game would be decided on the defensive end.

The Eagles had the better of turnovers in the first half, but got sloppy with the basketball down the stretch as the final box score showed both sides finishing with 13 turnovers a piece.

Anneli Maley caused three of the Eagles' turnovers, whilst also putting 16 points on the board alongside 11 points and six rebounds, finishing with a double-double.

The Falcons had four players scoring in the double digits, with Carley Ernst and Tegan Cunningham being the most impressive with 28 and 20 points respectively.

A lay up to open the third quarter from Diamond Valley’s Hope Terdich saw scores tied at 41, before the Falcons' bench became a major factor late in the game.

Waverley's secondary unit out-scored the Eagles' 12-4, which was ultimately the difference as the Falcons ran out seven-point victors.

NBL1 Men’s:

Diamond Valley have won three straight games after securing a 99-94 victory over Waverley at the DV Sports and Fitness Centre.

Diamond Valley piled on the pressure early, scoring 12 points before allowing the Falcons could impact on the scoreboard.

Joel Spear was strong for the Eagles with 32 points, three assists and three steals.

The Falcons scored 17 points from bench points, to Diamond Valley’s six bench points.

The Falcons' bench outscored Diamond Valley's 17-6 as they tried to lift their team to their first lead of the night.

A brilliant 37-point, 12-rebound double-double from Deondre McWhorter wasn't enough to overcome the powerful Eagles, who held on for a five-point victory to record their seventh win of the year.

This win puts Diamond Valley in 10th place, and in a strong position to make finals if they keep up their winning streak.

Good luck to both teams in their games against Nunawading this coming Sunday, at Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre!
