DVBA Coach Runs for Mental Health Awareness

Joel Norton, a current Diamond Valley Eagles coach for the 14-2 Boys and former Diamond Creekers Junior player/coach, is running the Melbourne Marathon this October to support Mental Health Awareness in the local sporting community. Three million people are currently experiencing anxiety or depression in Australia alone, and all fundraising will go towards providing the best possible support networks for these individuals.

Joel’s marathon journey in support of Beyond Blue has already begun, raising $1000 for the mental health charity; one step closer to his goal of $5000. Beyond Blue is a not-for-profit organisation working to address issues associated with depression, anxiety, and suicide, and aims to provide information and support for everyone in Australia to achieve their best possible mental health, whatever their age and wherever they live. Services include a 24/7 helpline, online chat room, email, and forum.

Understanding the effects of mental health is something Joel feels extremely passionate about. “I think this is something I’ve always wanted to do. Mental health is not just something you have or you don’t, it’s more like a continuum and everyone sits somewhere on that line. I have been deeply affected by mental health as a teenager; even now I still experience it. I feel it’s important everyone has some level of support in their life.”

Joel is currently working as a PT at Jetts Greensborough; the young coach has currently been raising money through his business and is calling upon the Diamond Valley community to help him reach his target.

In support of Joel, Beyond Blue and the importance of Mental Health; Diamond Valley Basketball Association will be dedicating our last NBL1 home game towards Mental Health Awareness. We will be donating all door takings to the fundraiser, providing donation boxes and assisting Joel in raising awareness by promoting the fundraiser across all social media platforms.
