Austerberry rules Aussie rules roost

BULLDOG Clint Austerberry has stamped his brilliance on a second Aussie rules competition by winning the WJ Williams Medal for the Townsville league's best and fairest.

The 29-year-old survived a thrilling finish in the count at Rydges last night, earning three points from the umpires in the final round to pip Thuringowa teammate Josh Hollis and Darby Walmsley (Tigers).

Austerberry finished on 18 votes. Hollis, who trailed by just one heading into the last week, and Walmsley had 14.

It was the third league best and fairest award for the onballer after he clinched two in the Mount Isa competition.

AFL Townsville football operations manager Bill Whitburn said Austerberry's effort was made all the more impressive when considering he played for the all-conquering Bulldogs, who finished the season undefeated.

"He's just a ball magnet. He knows how to read the play and how to get to where the ball is," he said.

It was even closer in the reserves count, where Thuringowa's Tim Cripps was named the Kevin Geddes medallist.
