Ron Royston (2003)

My introduction to soccer (football) commenced in March 1958 when my brother (John) and I walked onto Mackey Park, Marrickville, on Saturday morning. We were introduced to a Mr Tom Sanders who said "do you want to learn and play soccer" to which we both said "yes Mr Sanders".

I commenced in the 9/4's in 1958 and continued to play for Marrickville Soccer Club until retiring gracefully in 1992 after 34 seasons.

I attended Canterbury Boys High School from 1962 - 1965 where I represented the school in soccer for 4 years and was awarded a 'School Blue' award.

My coaching and managing career commenced in 1990 and still continues today. Over the years I have coached from U6's to All Age divisions. My greatest achievement in coaching was the 1999 U9/1's Grand-final between the undefeated Earlwood and Marrickville and the result was a 1-0 win to the 'Red Devils'.

I have been involved in the administration of Marrickville Soccer Club since 1981 through to today covering positions as Treasurer, Secretary and President.

My work for the CDSFA started in 1990, where I have held a number of positions, Senior Grading Committee, Appeals Committee, Executive Committee member and Auditor for the Association.

Highlights off the field include:

  • Meeting Sir Bobby Charlton at Mackey Park in the 1970's
  • Being part of the committee for Marrickville Soccer Club which held the 1988 U15s Australian Championship
  • Receiving Life Membership of Marrickville Soccer Club in 1981
  • Recognised by Soccer NSW in 1999 for services to soccer and the district.
  • Recognised by CDSFA with Life Membership for services to soccer in 2003
  • Patron of CDS Referees Association (2 years)

The game has given me the opportunity to learn, play and administer the game and now I am passing this knowledge onto others. I have met a great number of people through football to which I call friends and hope that this continues into the future.
