Round Wrap: Woodville v Sturt

By Mark Halliday

WOMEN

The Woodville Warriors have grabbed their fourth win in a row in the eraly part of the season as they took victory, 63-47, over the Sturt Sabres.

Tess Keenan was awarded the Spirit Medal on the ANZAC day clash. While Keenan finished with only seven points, her effort on both ends of the floor made her a stand out performer.

Keenan was continuously picking herself up off the floor as she threw her body into rebound battles and diving on loose balls. Her composure at the point and orchestrating the Warriors offence was important for the home side to keep their lead in the second half.

In the first half, however, it was Woodville's Callan Taylor who was on fire as she scored 19 of her game-high 23 points on almost perfect shooting.

Taylor benefited from the Warriors quick ball movement as she hit a number of long range shots during her impeccable start to the game.

Her first miss came right at the end of the second quarter after she made her first seven field goals, including one three pointer and all four free throws.

Taylor had outscored the Sabres in the first quarter, her 13 points to open the game was one better than Sturt's total.

The Sabres came back at the Warriors, largely due to the scoring output of Kate Gladstone.

12 points was Gladstone's total in the second quarter as she opened with a triple, stole the ball and took it all the way for a layup, made another three and then capped off her scoring burst with a free throw line jumper to cut the lead to three.

Unfortunately for Sturt the run wouldn't continue as the Warriors slowed the offensive output of the Sabres and controlled the game until the final buzzer.

Taylor's eight turnovers marred an otherwise great performance as she finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Katherine Perkas added 14 points.

The Warriors have a tough task ahead of them as they head to Mars to take on the undefeated Norwood Flames.

MEN

The Woodville Warriors locked their opponents down in the second quarter which lead to a 43 point thrashing of the visiting Sturt Sabres on ANZAC Day, 88-45.

Cameron Wilson received the Spirit Medal for his display of skill and leadership as he backed up import Ian Nixson, leading his team to a big win and top position on the ladder.

Wilson finished with 11 points and four rebounds and his defensive effort was superb, picking up three steals during the contest.

Defence was the theme for the Warriors in the second quarter, leading by six at the end of the first, Woodville limited the Sabres to just five points and rocketed ahead by 21 at the half.

The Warriors weren't giving the visitors a glimpse of the basket. Good looks were hard to come by for Sturt and the shots that did go up were constantly bouncing off the rim.

Sturt did have an edge on the boards as they consistently came up with offensive rebounds leading Warriors coach Corey MacLean to call a time out and could be heard imploring his players to rebound the basketball.

But the rebound advantage didn't help Sturt as they were outscored 20-5 in the second quarter and then 28-12 in the third.

Nixson lead all scorers with 23 points including three triples. During the third quarter, the Warriors import scored 11 straight points as he splashed a triple when his defender backed off and then made his way inside the arc for multiple mid-range shots.

Mitch Creek added 17 points and 10 rebounds and provided the highlight of the game in the third quarter when Daniel McKee softly threw the ball up for Creek to slam home an alley-oop.

Tim Klaosen was the top scorer for Sturt but was the only player to register double figure scoring with 10 points to go along with his eight rebounds.

The Warriors will face off against the Norwood Flames on Saturday for what is sure to be an incredible battle between the top two teams.
