Sideline Behaviour

Basketball Hawkes Bay supports and encourages good on-court and side-line behaviour. We see teams as being made up of not just the players but also the coaches, managers, parents and supporters. We have zero tolerance for abusive and inappropriate behaviour by any members of that team. This code of behaviour is a guideline to help all members of the team behave appropriately and make the basketball experience positive for all…..Are you part of the team?

Players

  • Play by the rules
  • Never argue with an official. If you disagree, have your captain, coach or manager approach the official during a break or after the competition.
  • Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials, sledging other players or deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent is not acceptable or permitted behaviour in any sport.
  • Work equally hard for yourself and/or your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will you.
  • Be a good sport. Applaud all good plays whether they are made by your team or the opposition.
  • Treat all participants in your sport as you like to be treated. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
  • Cooperate with your coach, team-mates and opponents. Without them there would be no competition.
  • Participate for your own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please your parents and coaches.

Coaches/Teachers

  • Remember that young people participate for pleasure and winning is only part of the fun.
  • Never ridicule or yell at a young player for making a mistake or not winning.
  • Be reasonable in your demands on players’ time, energy and enthusiasm.
  • Operate within the rules and spirit of the game and teach players to do the same.
  • Create opportunities to teach appropriate sports behaviours as well as basic skills
  • Ensure that the time players spend with you is a positive experience. All young people are deserving of equal attention and opportunities.
  • Avoid overplaying the talented players; the ‘just average’ need and deserve equal time.
  • Display control, respect and professionalism to all involved with the sport. This includes opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators. Encourage players to do the same. Any physical contact with a young person should be appropriate to the situation and necessary for the player’s skill development. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

Parents and Supporters

  • Remember that children participate in sport for their enjoyment and benefit, not yours
  • Focus on your child’s efforts and performance rather than whether they win or lose.
  • Applaud good performances and efforts from all individuals and teams.
  • Respect the decisions of officials and teach young people to do the same.
  • Never ridicule or scold a young player for making a mistake. Positive comments are motivational.
  • Condemn the use of violence in any form, whether it is by spectators, coaches, officials or players.
  • Show respect for your team’s opponents and show appreciation for volunteer coaches, the officials and administrators. Without them there would be no game.
  • Do not use foul language, sledge or harass players, coaches or officials.
  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gander, ability, cultural background or religion.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
