Club basketball got underway last weekend with a record 121 team entered in the competition, 16 of which are in a new innovation by Canterbury Basketball - in the McDonalds Thompson Trophy Secondary school competition, which is being held in the school gyms on a Tuesday evenings commencing April 28th.

Men’s and Women’s Premier grades starts on May 2nd with North Canterbury Men dropping out while North Canterbury Women have entered a strong and competitive team, coached by the highly successful Clinton Olson, in the Women’s Premier and is mainly based on current and former players from the North Canterbury region. This leaves seven teams in each grade.

The 10 team Men’s Under 23 got off to a bright but variable start with four contrasting games played in the St. Bede's gym on Saturday.

The defending champion Lincoln University Bulls already looks the team to beat as it ran polished moves and strong defence powering away from a new look Checkers side 112 points to 58. Gators Green, led by Andrew Kellaway and Jordan Duggan with precision moves, raced away from a new look Lincoln Longhorns to win 109-46.

Atami, also with a near new team including a number of Shirley players, made a strong start against Gators White. Tom Cooper, fresh from Timaru, led a Gators recovery in the next two quarters to take a handy 63-54 lead. In the final quarter Atami led by Patrick Roger came back to trail by one point with eight seconds remaining when a Gators player hit the rear wall and play was held up for 40 minutes until an ambulance arrived.

On resumption, new man Josh Peterman coolly sunk both free throws to give victory to Atami 75-74.

Wolverines hung on against Pioneer, having earlier a 30 point lead but Pioneer with Harley Campbell driving the lanes, came back 27-18 in the final quarter with Wolverines escaping to a narrow 90-80 win. The University/North Canterbury encounter was deferred.

Boy’s Under 17

2014 Defending Champion: Papanui HS

This grade attracted 18 entries before Nth Canterbury were forced to withdraw their entry leaving all 17 teams in a tight round robin robin.

Most teams have a balance of new players while still having a base from which to build competitive teams as the season progresses.

Cashmere High Gold with four players with double figure scoring stands out early and Middleton Grange Green made a strong start against the defending champion Papanui High which has lost some of its tall timber. Papanui showed resilience last season so don’t count them out just yet.

Scorers were:

Ch h Boys HS Black 83 (Boeing Benevice 27, Jamie Thieks 19, Jack Lang 16) Burnside Green 55 (Jayden Cameron 18, Simon Lufael 16),

Burnside Black 83 (Isaiah Morris 21, Cameron Malone 14, TK Cooper 13) ChCh Boys' HS Blue 41 (Kurt Peneon 13),

Middleton Grange Green 97 (Angus McWilliam 21, Will Gilpin 16, Sam Tang 16) Papanui HS 36 (Arama Thompson 12, Jordan Pollock 11),

Defending champion 2014: Shirley Spartans

North Canterbury’s club basketball season got underway last weekend with its Boys Under 15 side recording a re-sounding 111-22 win over a new young team from Christchurch Boys High in the Bishopdale YMCA on Sunday. Both the last and fourth quarters Nth Canterbury scored 33-2 while leading 58-13 at the break.

Wharenui Gators, Burnside Bears and Shirley Spartans already appear to be well-balanced sides in this eight team competition.
