The Broken Hill Community Credit Union sponsored Lightning Cup was played on Saturday 31st March, in very hot conditions, with all four Clubs having some success in the round robin competition.
South's won the competition with a superior percentage after scoring two wins again West & Central but fell short against a powerful North combination. Cody Schorn looked in fine form and is the early favourite for the leading goal kicking award. Marc Purcell was dominant in the midfield whilst the dash of Simon O'Brien from half back will set up many scoring chances for the Roos in 2012.
Norths fielded a large squad over the 3 games and their round 1 loss to Central by a large margin destroyed their percentage. In that game North's fielded only 6 players from the 2011 Premiership team. Following that game they outplayed West in game 2 before winning a high standard final round robin game against Souths.
West had a win over Central and would be well pleased with their younger players who all look to be very fit and full of run. Central's under new Coach Justin Heath aslo played a big squad over the three games. Heath, who chose the watch on from the sidelines, would have been pleased with Paul Christie & Jarred Paul in the midfield, whilst Riley Pearce took some nice grabs from CHF. With Brad Mannion & Jay Carapolotti also turning out the CFC are well placed to challenge again in 2012.
The Umpiring stocks were boosted by Gavin Blows who has many years at junior level to draw upon.
Round one commences with a double header at the Jube after the Easter break.
