To have two elite current day AFL Umpires in Broken Hill was a huge bonus for our Lightning Cup weekend.
Visiting Broken Hill was Simon Meredith a field umpire who has reached the pinnacle of all Umpires having umpired the last 3 AFL Grand Finals. Also in Broken Hill was Tim Morrison an 87 game up and coming boundary umpire. They were in Broekn Hill with AFL NSW/ ACT southern Umpires Manager Troy Mavroudis himslef a former AFL Goal Umpire.
The three Umpires took a local training session on the Friday evening passing on the individual skills required for each type of Umpiring.
Saturday morning after an interview on the local ABC they had a 1 hour session with the four local clubs Coaches and key players on a forum titled Good Coaches make Good Umpires.
The rest of Saturday saw the Umpires get involved in umpiring and mentoring the remaining 9 games of the Lightning Cup for Ladies and Men.
The crowd of 1,000 was in awe of the Boundary throwing skills of Morrsion and the Centre bouncing skills of Meredith.
Morrison did a power of running all afternoon mentoring new boundary umpires on the right technique and positions to stand.
Meredith shadowed the field umpires giving them "on the job" training before umpiring the final game of the lightning cup.
The day rounded out with the Umpires joining Broken Hill Board and Competition Managers for a meal at the popular Astra Hotel.
On the Sunday a visit underground to the Rasp Mine was a highlight for all three visiting Umpires before a quick trip to Silverton to visit the Mad Max set and Mundi Mundi plains were Mad Max was filmed.
The visit was a huge success for AFL Broken Hill and hopefully the 3 Umpires enjoyed visiting the Outback where AFL is played as passionatley as in Melbourne.
