Tami Moore joins an elite group of female goal umpires in Broken Hill Saturday when she officiates in her first Men's A grade game in the match of the day North v Central at the Jubilee Oval.
Tami commenced umpiring in mid 2014 as a boundary umpire in our Women's league said Board Chairman Peter Nash. At the start of the 2015 season Tami took an interest in Goal Umpiring and that interest was heightened in late March when former AFL Goal Umpire Troy Mavroudas visited Broken Hill with AFL Umpires Simon Meredith and Tim Morrison for a Community Camp.
Tami is a natural said Mr Nash; she is calm, and makes great position in relation to angles. Tami has a bright future Goal Umpiring in what will be her first and last A grade game in Broken Hill. Tami has just been advised of a job opportunity in Canberra so its a bitter sweet day for AFL BH but I am confident Tami is keen to stay involved in AFL and with great coaching she will develop into another great female role model to help swell the ranks of female umpires.
Mr Nash said we have an expanding group of female umpires with Tami and Ros O'Connor in goals. two junior female boundary umpires and Stacey Toohey who is Broken Hill's fitest umpire and usually does a junior or female field game Saturday morning before running a senior boundary game.
From two female umpires to five inside six months is great news and this has been assisted by a Joss Grant in 2014 which helped build a dedicated female change room for umpires and first aid room for female players.
Mr Nash encouraged any aspiring Umpires to come forward and try out. We have many experienced umpires to learn from and the AFL Community Club website has numerous umpiring video's to fast track future umpires.
Tami is pictured in the Trainee Green top with Ros watching on during the pre season competition.
