President's Update April 27th 2012

Mercy Rule

At last Monday’s Executive meeting the committee voted on and passed a Mercy Rule which will come into effect for the current winter season.  At times there have been games that have been very lopsided and this rule will go some way to making the experience of players more enjoyable.

The development of this rule emanated from a discussion at the Special General Meeting and the Executive took on board the clubs’ wishes to create a rule for inclusion in the association’s by-laws.

David Hickman and Bill Rewell collaborated on the formulation of the rule with David researching mercy rules from many associations.

The best of these rules have been encapsulated into the EDJBA’s rule which will be circulated by Jo Chu in the very near future and will take effect after grading.  We ask all coaches and referees to act on the rule in the spirit it is intended. It is designed to ensure a greater level of enjoyment for all players.

Grading Forum

The date for the Grading Forum has been set by the Executive.  This forum will be chaired by David Bacon who works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure fixtures, results and ladders are up to date on the website, a task for which we are eternally grateful.

This forum is an opportunity for all clubs to have a say in the grading process and I cannot stress enough if you have a concern re grading get to this meeting to express it.

If you would like items put on the agenda please forward them to Jo Chu who will advise David Bacon.

The date is Monday 23rd July 2012.  Put it in your diary if you want to have your say.

Referees Forum

The Referees Forum has now been allocated a date.  It is to be held on Monday 4th June 2012. This meeting will involve the Referee Advisors from all clubs plus each club’s Appointments Officer and others who may have a keen interest in referee matters.

I personally am very keen to have this forum so that a consistent level of officiating and a set of operational guidelines can be implemented across the association’s competition.

With varying levels of expertise spread throughout the clubs the forum will give the smaller and the not so smaller clubs the opportunity to tap into the knowledge and expertise of more experienced and better resourced clubs.

Jo Chu is responsible for the convening of this important meeting and is in the process of enlisting the services of a number of very experienced referees/officials to assist her in setting up the agenda for the day.  The forum will be of vital importance in working towards an even higher level of officiating in all EDJBA games.

Big Fixtures Day

The date for this day has been set and preparations are under way to ensure one of the association’s major activities goes without a hitch.  The venue will be the same as for last season, that is Beverley Hills Primary School, with the date being Sunday 3rd of June 2012.

Of considerable interest was the report by Jo Chu at the Executive meeting that David Bacon had been working on a computer fixturing system that may very possibly eliminate much of the time and complexity of Fixtures Day.

This was exciting news and if David can manage to produce a system that does all we want it to do, or at least the majority of it, then he is a genius.

Branding

Following on from the development of a logo the Executive committee has decided to develop branding guidelines to allow future office holders knowledge to allow them to project a strong and consistent image of the EDJBA through the logo, stationary, the website, newsletters, signage and marketing collateral.

Jo Chu, John Morkham, Penne Ebbage and myself will form a subcommittee to develop a brief for Gavin Smith to work to, to allow all the above elements to be developed.

Of importance is the brand mark (logo), different versions of the mark for various functions, size, font and especially colours which must stay consistent if the image is to have impact and be readily recognised.

This is an exciting project which will create a powerful and professional image that should carry the EDJBA forward as it markets itself in a very competitive sporting marketplace.

Summer Season Finals

The summer season Grand Finals have been played as everyone knows.  One of the pleasing aspects of the finals was the fact that all clubs tasted success with every club winning multiple titles.  From a competition point of view it is important that the smaller clubs can win a final and that despite the bigger clubs winning the majority of the games everyone has a success to hang on to.

The philosophy of the EDJBA is to foster competition between clubs in a Junior Domestic competition in a way that ensures competitive games, no matter the level they are played at and for everyone to have a fair opportunity to have success.

Therefore the results have shown that this is possible and for me this was the most pleasing aspect of the finals.

In particular it was very good to see Banyule, Koonung, Whitehorse, Doncaster and Marcellin on the winner’s list.

We thank everyone for their support and the manner in which the finals were played.

 Happy Hoops
