Big V Weekly Wrap Round 4

In another huge round of Big V action, a big weekend for our Big V Boomers as all teams notched a win for the weekend. There were convincing wins for both our women's teams, as well as our State Championship Men. Our Youth Champ Men had the close one, with a last gasp win over the Sandringham Sabres with the last free throw of the game from Jordan Little.

Here's the wrap for all games.

Youth Championship Women

Our Youth Women are finding their feet as a team and were looking to continue their good form against a young Diamond Valley team.

And the girls shot out of the blocks with some great team play to lead the Eagles early. Emma Pearce was pretty much unstoppable inside until Diamond Valley used a half court trap to force a number of Boomers turnovers and mount a fightback.

The middle of the game was pretty even as the Eagles fought back to narrow the lead to single digits, but the Boomers steadied in the last quarter to run out winners 68 - 47.

Emma Pearce continued her strong early season form to dominate the game with 27 points and 7 boards. Bridgett O'Neill had 9 points and Oliva West chipped in with 7.

A big test coming up next weekend for the girls as they take on the Knox Raiders at home on Sunday at EDSC.

State Championship Women

With a couple of players missing, this could have been a danger game for our Champ Women, also up against local rival the Diamond Valley Eagles.

Early on the Eagles looked dangerous, taking a narrow lead into quarter time as the Boomers struggled to find the basket. But the girls steadied in the second quarter and a big Taylor Hall triple got things moving as the Boomers led by 7 at half time.

It was basket for basket until the last few minutes and the lead stayed around the 10 point mark. In the last few minutes, the Eagles chose to foul and the game was iced from the free throw line as the Boomers closed out a hard fought 64 - 48 win.

Lauren Pearce led the way with 16 points and 11 boards, with great support from Tennille Nash with 15 points and Ali Drennan with 13 points. New import Taylor Hall is still fitting in with the team, but chipped in with a handy 12 points and 4 boards.

Our Champ Women have started the season well, but face a big game next Sunday at home against the Southern Peninsula Sharks.

Youth Championship Men

Game of the week was always going to be our Youth Champ Men, taking on the Sandringham Sabres in an away fixture.

The boys started well to take an early lead, but the Sabres fought back hard in the second quarter to be only a few points down at half time.

In the third quarter, the Boomers fell in a horrible hole, making only one field basket for the quarter and allowing Sandringham to open up an 8 point lead.

With two minutes on the clock in the last quarter the boys were still six points down, but a huge Ernst Kuger trey followed by a Jordan Little offensive stick back suddenly had the gap at a solitary point. The Sabres scored again, but another triple this time from Tom Kielty levelled the scores with 30 seconds to play.

Sandringham had the ball and tried for the last shot of the game with the clock running down, but Jordan Little was fouled with three seconds on the clock and sent to the line for the bonus. The first shot clanged off the iron, but the second dropped for a 68 - 67 Boomer lead. The Sabres had three seconds to get off a hail mary which missed, leaving the Boomers with a memorable win.

Our Youth Champ Men are home again next week in a double header matchup on Sunday with our Youth Women against the Knox Raiders.

State Championship Men

Our State Champ Men visited the Sherbrooke Suns with an opportunity to grab a vital away win. And the boys didn't disappoint, being far too strong for the Suns to win 92 - 69. The Boomers won every quarter to extend the margin through the game, easing down in the last as Coach Ben Draper rotated the bench.

After a disappointing shooting game last week, captain Liam Norton hit back in the best way possible to lead the scoring with 24 points and 6 boards, while Brett Fennell with 19 points and Scott Cuffe with 17 points were great contributors. US import Kinard Gadsden-Gillard chimed in with 14 points and grabbed a game high 9 boards.

A big weekend coming up next week for our State Champ Men, with a home game on Saturday night against McKinnon, then backing up on Sunday to take on the Hawthorn Magic at Booroondara.
