Big V Weekly Wrap Round 6

Another big weekend for our Boomers Big V teams, big double header win for our Youth Women and wins for both our State Champ teams, with only our Youth Men having a poor shooting weekend to go down - here's the weekly wrap.

Youth Championship Women

A big double header weekend for our Youth Women, with Frankston on Saturday night at home then a huge challenge in an away fixture against the highly rated Nunawading Spectres.

Saturday went to script, with the Boomers far too good for the Frankston Blues, pulling away in every quarter for a resounding 75 - 36 win. As usual, Emma Pearce led the way with a massive double double of 18 points and 17 boards, including a monster 13 O boards. The E machine just rolls on. Great support from Bridie Feehan with 14 points and Fyffe and O'Neill also grabbed 10 boards each.

Sunday was a big away match up against the Nunawading Spectres, who just sit above the Boomers on the ladder. And this one was a cracker - the girls snuck out to a narrow 5 point lead at quarter time, then it was basket for basket through the middle of the game. In the last quarter the Spectres threw everything they had at the Boomers, who just did enough at the end to grab a fabulous 70 - 67 win.

Emma Pearce blitzed the scoresheet with 32 points and 10 boards (Note to Big V - Blue Carpet please). Is there nothing this girl can't do ? Great to see Kiera Rowe on court and chipping in with 11 points.

Youth Championship Men

This one is fairly simple - the Boomers had a shocker and went down to the Nunawading Spectres 68 - 86.

No matter how you cut it, 24 from 92 field goal attempts at 26% is not going to win the game. Jordan Little managed 18 points and Harry Fayle tried hard for 15 points.

Forget that one boys, time to move on to next week.

State Championship Women

To put it bluntly, the Suns are struggling and the Boomers eased through their away game at Sherbrooke with relative ease to win 69 - 26.

Loz Pearce led the way with 15 points and 9 boards, while Ali Drennan and Taylor Hall chimed in with 12 points each.

This was one just to grab the win and move on - there will be bigger challenges in the next few weeks.

State Championship Men

Big game for our Champ Men against the Werribee Devils - the boys form has been a bit up and down so this was a critical away game to try and win and stay in the top six. A big downer pre game for the Boomers, with Captain Liam Norton not taking the court.

The game itself was another cracker - nothing between the teams all game, end to end and basket for basket. The Boomers went into the last quarter leading by a solitary point ... they managed to sneak out to a 4 point lead, only for the Devils to peg it back.

With 1:15 on the clock, Werribee make a crucial basket to grab a 3 point lead ... but a Cuffe basket and two critical Beston free throws game the Boomers back a 1 point lead with 40 seconds to play. Werribee tried to manage the clock for two plays, but a big Scotty Cuffe block followed by an offensive call gave the Boomers the ball back.

The Devils had to foul and sent Brett Fennell to the line who made 1 from 2 for a 2 point Boomers lead - Werribee had 9 seconds to score and opted for the big three attempt to try and win the game which missed, giving the boys a well deserved win.

Brett Fennell led the way with 18 points and 8 boards, while Scott Cuffe had 15 points and Kinard Gadsden-Gillard had 13 points.

A big home round next weekend with all teams featuring at East Doncaster Secondary College - it's a Youth Women/Champ Men double header on Saturday night, while the Youth Men and Champ Women suit up on Sunday afternoon.

Get on out to EDSC next weekend and support our Big V Boomers.
