Big V Weekly Wrap Round 7

It was a big weekend of Big V action for with 6 games for Round 7, including double headers for both our state Youth Championship teams.

And it was a mixed bag of results, with both Youth teams splitting their weekend double headers, while our State Champ Women were disappointing losing to Hume City, but our State Champ Men just did enough to hold off the Whittlesea Pacers.

Here a wrap of all games.

Youth Championship Women

What started off looking like a big chance to grab a weekend double for our Youth Women looked a little less certain on Saturday with scoring machine Emma Pearce sitting on the sidelines for the weekend.

But in their first up game against the Bendigo Braves, the whole team stepped up to fill the gap. The girls started like a house on fire, with quick ball movement and good offensive execution resulting in a 23 - 5 lead at quarter time. While the Braves found some composure through the middle of the game, the Boomers always looked in control and ran away for a convincing 85 - 47 win.

Amelia Smith led the way with 19 points and Olivia West was excellent with 16 points. Claudia Armato and Kara Tessari chipped in with 10 points, while Dani Calvisi was just short of a double doule with 13 boards and 9 points.

On Sunday the girls had to back up against the undefeated Melbourne Tigers, a task all the more tougher without their leading scorer. And the game was really decided by one poor quarter in the second as the Boomers just could not find a way to score. The girls fought out the game hard, but could not quite close the gap to go down 59 - 65.

Amelia Smith was again leading scorer with 16 points, while Bridgett O'Neill had a double double with 11 points and 13 boards. Olivia West chipped in with 10 points.

A tough game but the girls acquitted themselves admirably and can take away some lessons for next time.

Youth Championship Men

After a shocker last weekend, our Youth Men were looking to bounce back and had a great opportunity for an away win at Waverley.

While not exactly convincing, the boys did enough to defeat the Falcons 76 - 66 and get back on the winners list. Chris Nave was outstanding with 21 points and 10 boards, with great support from Ernst Kruger with 14 points and Harry Fayle with 13 points.

A much tougher challenge presented on Sunday, with a home game against the ladder leading Kilsyth Cobras.

The Cobras came out on fire and grabbed an early 10 point lead at quarter time. The Boomers fought hard across the next two quarters and managed to level the scores by three quarter time so it all came down to the last stanza.

The boys certainly created enough shot opportunities in the last, but just could not buy the critical baskets. In the last couple of minutes the Boomers had to foul and Kilsyth iced the game from the line to win 76 - 71.

Tom Kielty was a standout with 22 points and 9 boards, while Harry Fayle with 15 points and Jordan Little with a double double of 14 points and 11 boards had good games.

Again, the boys were by no means disgraced and showed they are not far off matching it with the top team.

State Championship Women

It was a big game for our Champ Women, taking on the undefeated Hume City Broncos. The Boomers started like a house on fire, jumping out to an early lead but then let the opposition back into the game with plenty of free throws from unnecessary fouls.

The second quarter was awful as shot selection deserted the girls but they fought hard in the third to keep in touch with Hume City. But it all fell apart in the last as shooting touch deserted the Boomers and they finally went down 58 - 78.

Taylor Hall was best with 19 points and 8 boards, while Ali Drennan tried hard with 14 points. The rest of the shooting numbers were pretty awful and Coach Matt Papps has some work to do over the next few weeks.

State Championship Men

Our Champ Men have also had their ups and downs recently and were expected to win against the Whittlesea Pacers but still had to put together a decent game.

Another game where a blazing start with some great transition basketball put the Boomers up early and forced an early Pacers timeout. Whittlesea found some composure and at times threatened to close the gap, but with captain Liam Norton in great touch (except perhaps from the foul line), the boys always seemed to have an answering basket.

The Pacers had the gap in single digits early in the last, but a timely Scotty Cuffe trey killed the contest and the Boomers ended up with the W 92 - 80.

Liam Norton was outstanding with 28 points, while Scott Cuffe and Brett Fennell had 14 points each. Plenty of other contributions as well in a overall good team performance.

Another busy round next weekend as East Doncaster Secondary College as Saturday night sees a State Champ Women and Men double header against McKinnon and Waverley respectively, followed by our Youth Women hosting the Geelong in a Mother's Day matchup on Sunday afternoon.

Get out to a game next weekend at EDSC Boomers fans and support our Big V teams.
