Big V Weekly Wrap Round 9

A fairly good round for our Big V Boomers in Round 9, with all teams registering a win except for our State Champ Women.

A bit of a strange result for our Youth Champ Men who played a game against the Frankston Blues but were always going to win due to a compliance issue between Frankston and Big V.

Here's the weekly wrap.

Youth Championship Women

In theory this should have been a relatively easy game for the Boomers, up against the winless Frankston Blues. And in the first half, the girls looked comfortable, doing enough to ease out to a double digit lead.

But Frankston came storming back in the third quarter with some big threes and the Boomers offense stalled, with the Blues closing the gap to a single point at the last break.

It was by no means convincing, but the girls regained composure and just did enough in the last quarter to run out 61 - 55 winners. Emma Pearce again led the sheet with 20 points and 9 boards, while Olivia West chipped in with 13 points and Kara Tessari 10 points.

Not a convincing win, but it's in the book and the Boomers move on to next week.

Youth Championship Men

Probably the less said about this the better - Frankston have a compliance issue with Big V so the Boomers were always going to be handed a technical win from this game.

A game was played but it was a bit of a non event so we won't even attempt a report.

Another one for just moving on to next week.

State Championship Women

In theory this should have been a close matchup as the Boomers took on fellow finals contender the Waverley Falcons.

Unfortunately, the girls happened to catchup Waverley on a day when their big guns fired and they pretty much shot the lights out, recording 56% for the game and 80% in one quarter.

After being down early, the Boomers fought hard the closed the game to 6 points on more than one occasion, but Waverley just have scoring options everywhere and were always able to grab clutch baskets at will from Cunningham or Mijovic.

In the end, it was the Falcons 86 - 70 in a slightly disappointing result for the girls. Loz Pearce tried hard with 17 points, while Ali Drennan had 13. Maree Drennan and Taylor Hall both had 10.

A huge double header weekend coming up next weekend for the Boomers with away games against Southern Pen and Ringwood. The girls will need to play well to at least split next round.

State Championship Men

This was a huge game for our Champ Men, up against fellow finals contender the Hume City Broncos.

The Boomers shot out of the blocks, with Liam Norton and KGG causing havoc for the Broncos as the boys grabbed an early double digit lead. Hume City evened up the scoring in the second quarter but could not close the gap as tempers became a little frayed at times.

The Broncos found more scoring optons in the third quarter as the Boomers went cold and the gap closed to a 6 point margin. The last quarter was basket for basket and Hume City had the lead down to two before a clutch trey from Scot Cuffe, followed by a string of free throws allowed the Boomers to ice the game 82 - 74.

Scotty Cuffe was outstanding with 25 points and 5 boards, while Liam Norton had 17 points and 8 boards. Karl Beston was a great contributor with 14 points, while KGG and Brett Fennell had 11 each.

A good win by the boys to hold their place in the finals race - as with the Champ Women, a big weekend next week with an away double header against Whittlesea and Ringwood.

Bit of a strange weekend next week, with lots of away fixtures - the only home game next weekend at EDSC is Saturday night at 7pm with our Youth Women taking on Ballarat.
