Big V Weekly Wrap Round 10

Big V 300

A tough weekend for our Big V Boomers, with both our Champ Men and Women facing double header away games for the round, while our Youth teams were both looking to consolidate form.

Our Youth Women did well in easily accounting for Ballarat, while our Youth Men had another horror shooting game in going down to Hawthorn.

Our Champ Men managed to split their double header, while our Champ Women fought hard but unfortunately went down in both their games.

Here's the weekly wrap.

Youth Championship Women

A cross pool match up for our Youth Women this round as they took on the Ballarat Miners at EDSC. This could have been a danger game for the Boomers as Ballarat are third in their pool, but the girls came ready to play.

With scoring machine Emma Pearce back on court, the Boomers powered out of the blocks, particularly in the second quarter to barely give the Miners a sniff for the whole game.

The girls won every quarter and dominated the rebound count 51 - 22, running out comfortable winners 82 - 45. The only concern for Coach Gary Fox would have been the turnover count of 22 for the game, which really needs to be lower against the top teams.

The E-train was on fire, 36 points and 10 boards in 26 minutes on court - wow, well done Emma Pearce.

Kara Tessari chimed in with 13 points, while Bridget O'Neill nailed a double double of 11 points and 11 boards. Good to see Sam Moodie back on court with the girls on her return from college in the US.

Our Youth Women are home again next Sunday to take on the Hawthorn Magic at EDSC.

Youth Championship Men

Our Youth Men started the season strongly, but the occasional poor shooting game has cost them dearly. And this was another one against the Hawthorn Magic, as the Boomers put up 18 more field attempts than their opponents, but still managed to go down 65 - 73.

The boys worked their hardest in the third quarter to put the Magic under pressure and grab a narrow lead, but could not sustain the effort on the last quarter for a disappointing loss.

Richard Oryem led the Boomers with 16 points, while Jordan Little recorded a double double of 13 points and 13 boards. Tom Kielty managed 11 points with 9 boards.

Consistency will be the theme for Coach Rob Grieve to work on over the next few weeks - and in a bit of a fixturing quirk, the boys take on the Magic again next week at home in a double header with the Youth Women on Sunday.

State Championship Women

A big weekend for our Champ Women as they had an away double header in a weekend which may well define their season. And probably a split weekend would have been a good result, but unfortunately is was not to be as the girls went down to both the Southern Peninsula Sharks and the Ringwood Hawks.

Against the Sharks, the Boomers were right in it for most of the game, but nothing would drop in the last quarter as the Sharks wrapped up the game 62 - 52. The turnover count of 19 hurt the girls, as well as a 1 from 12 result for the game from the three point line.

Taylor Hall and Lauren Pearce both scored 11 points, with Hall also grabbing 11 boards.

Another huge game on Sunday against ladder leaders the Ringwood Hawks, and the Boomers certainly did not go down without a fight. This game was basket for basket all night, with the scores level at half time, and never more than 5 points apart.

The Boomers were down by 3 and with the ball for a chance to send the game into overtime, but the shot attempt from Taylor Hall rimmed out and the game was done. Ali Drennan and Loz Pearce had 14 points each.

A tough weekend for the Boomers, but the girls just hang on to fifth on the ladder. With those two games out of the way, the Boomers take on the Melbourne Tigers next weekend and certainly need to be winning against teams below them on the ladder.

State Championship Men

Our Champ Men also had an away double header weekend to contend with and came away with a split result.

Against the Whittlesea Pacers on Saturday, it was a tight first half until the Boomers had a strong third quarter to ease out to a 6 point lead. The Pacers fought hard in the last with a barrage of field attempts, but the boys did enough to hold the lead and ice the game from the line.

Brett Fennell and KGG had big double doubles, with 19 points/11 boards and 11 points/10 boards respectively. Liam Norton was also busy with 16 points.

On Sunday the Boomers had to back up against the Ringwood Hawks who just had too much firepower, with the boys going down 71 - 117. The Boomers actually had more field goal attempts than Ringwood, but the Hawks just shot the lights out at 56% for the game.

Derrick McDonald was the standout for the Boomers with 22 points and 6 boards, Scotty Cuffe chipped in with 10 points.

No time to rest for the boys as they need to regroup for an important away game next Saturday against the Diamond Valley Eagles.
